Have you had a bad reaction to the H1N1 vaccine? If so what happened?

:paw: Hospital is offering H1N1 vaccine today to employees, I am hesitant to take it due to the possible reaction.:paw:

I'm curious about your shingles. Have you had the shingles vaccine yet? My husband just had his 2 weeks ago, no problems just curious on its effectiveness. I've seen horrible cases of shingles so encouraged him to obtain it. Hope yours was not a bad case.

Too late for me to get the vax. No, it was not as bad as I would have thought, and didn't look like anything cases I had seen before so I did not recognize it for what it was. I was totally surprised at the dx. Don't want to highjack this thread so here's my story: https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/my-new-diagnosis-436629.html

Anyway, I thought it might be better to postpone any vaccination until I am feeling and looking better. I'll probably have to purchase my vax though as my hospital only had 40 doses left as of Friday. They say they will get more soon. I do want the vaccine.

Swine flu vaccine is the first flu vaccine in which I had absolutely no reaction at all. Not even a sore arm.

considering your age, you prob. were exposed to the '57 flu, which is considered at least tangentially similar

Arm was barely even sore a day after...HOWEVER... the day following the injection I had severe nerve pain in that arm that nothing could alleviate (except sitting/standing up for a while) that had me almost in tears. I went to an orthopedic surgeon thinking it was carpal tunnel but he thinks it is thoracic outlet syndrome caused from the vaccine. FUN.

I have not had mine yet as I am just getting over shingles, but five of my night co-workers marched over to employee health in the last 2 weeks, and got theirs. All of them are fine. They did it to protect their families and the patients as well as themselves, and I am proud of them. Hope to get my dose soon.

And after that, a few months later, how about getting the new shingles vaccine?

I have received the regular flu shot every year since age 18 (now 26). For the most part I always remember getting a sore arm. Felt like someone punched me hard in my arm. This year I received both flu shots in the same arm at the same time. My arm became very itchy for an hour or so. Never became sore as it usually does.

As I was leaving work this morning, there was a briskly moving line of all types of house staff rolling up their sleeves in our main lobby. That was a smart idea. This was catching the attention of those coming on and off shifts.

Everyone was quickly signing forms and being vaccinated with H1N1 vaccine. Interestingly, our hospital is using the single dose, thimerasol free vaccine. I jumped into line, quickly got my vax. It all took just a few minutes. I went home and slept peacefully all day knowing that my 3 twelve hour night shifts for the weekend were done with.

I am happy to say that I feel just fine so far. I can expect to have antibodies in about 8-10 days. I also know that my maximum immune response will take about 3 weeks.

Dr. Niman of Recombinomics says that "an infection shortly after a vaccine might make the infection worse initially because the immune system is battling the vaccine, and could be more easily overwhelmed by a new infection. Full protection is defined by peak antibody levels. Antibody levels at 8-10 days is far from peak levels."

I am thinking that I already had this virus, but I was not tested so who knows... I am just increasing my chances of not getting it at all or of getting it again by going for those antibodies. I do believe that we will be seeing a third pandemic wave in January with extensive illness. The disease will be widespread throughout our communities by that time as many will not have been vaccinated yet. Transmittal can occur anywhere peope gather, not just at work. I am not going to have to be concerned about that particular problem anymore in about 3 weeks.

indigogirl: Your episode with whatever it was, must be better. I'm glad it's gone.

I was able to get my H1N1 shot today - so excited! I thought I probably wouldn't be able to get it until January with the way availability was going for a while there. So far so good, not even a sore arm, but I will post back if I have any symptoms that I think might be related. I'm not really expecting anything but I must admit I always am a little concerned about the possibility of GBS, but not enough to keep me from getting the shot.

ETA: Of course, clinicals and in fact the whole semester are almost over, and now I get the shot, LOL. I thought for sure H1N1 would sweep through our campus or show up at clinicals this semester but it really hasn't, oddly enough.

Watching CNN News just now, I heard that a mutation of H1N1 occurring now, is causing that flu/mutated form of it, to invade deeper (?) into the body, causing more damage than it did previously; and attacks those who have been vaccinated. Sensationalist journalism?

Oh dear, I feel like I'm spreading news that may or may not be as menacing as it sounded........ but it is in line with earlier thinking about this....:o

This peolple were not vaccinated with H1N1 as far as I know. If they were that is news, but I really doubt that is the case.
