The entrance test for the community college I am trying to get in is going to start using a placement test this year. It is by ACCUPLACER and is given via computer. Does anyone have any experience with this test?
Thanks!

Yes, I had to take it before applying to my college. It determined where I'd get placed in Math and English (what level).
It was very basic math with algebra, Basic English questions and at the end a timed essay.
Good luck!

Haha! I almost maxed out the scores for reading & writing. I took them down like a sumo wrestler. The math was a different story. Out of 100 i got a 36 the first time, and i made a 68 after i took what was the first, in a battery of intro to algebra courses. I still need 2 more warmer courses before College Algebra I, but I have a cheaters plan.
The Nursing program here just needs you to show math proficiency, which translates into either a passing grade in college algebra I or a 76 on the accuplacer. There were 12 questions on the math portion of the accuplacer so i guess i missed by 1 or 2 last time. My plan is to hire a tutor to get me the 76 and save me from 3 semesters of math. I know, I know, I'll need the credits for my BSN, but I'll get to it after im banking with an ADN-RN.
I'm taking A&P II, Freshman Comp II and Ethics this semester. Micro, and Chemistry next semester. Then, that's it. It's time for the real deal.
This whole Accuplacer thing, hangs in the balance. It's a risk to rely on these scores, but it's the quickest shot i have to get into these main courses. Nursing is all I ever think about doing these days.

The accuplacer test I took didn't stop at 100. I got 117/118/119 in Sentence Structure/spelling, Math, Reading Comprehension....in that order.

I took the accuplacer tests a couple of weeks ago. For the most part, I think that we all are taking the same ones as it is done by a national company. The reading comprehension and grammar tests were pretty easy for me and I scored over a hundred. The math put me exactly where I thought I would end up - above arithmatic, but in Algebra 1. I am taking a basic Algebra course online through CNM.edu. By taking it through their SAGE (Adult education online), it is only costing me $160. - it isn't for credit, but that doesn't matter because I need to get up to the level of Math that the nursing schools accept.

It's 8th grade level Algebra(and some Trig), English and Reading Comprehension. It's not that difficult and don't bother studying for it. It's merely a tool to show where you need to start in the prereqs.
If you do poorly in an area they'll make you take a remedial level course.
Wow, not 8th grade stuff in our state! Guess each state is different, but they don't teach Algebra and trig in 8th grade here. The comprehension certainly wasn't 8th grade level either.
Wow, by 8th grade I had to take Stat and Algebra which included basic Trig.
I must disagree with the reading/English. That was 8th grade level. I just think many people forget that it is something that must be practiced.
Guess that is what makes the world go round - everyone has different opinions!ehe Have a good day!

I haven't taken the test, but I did look up some info about it online. If you Google it, there are some practice tests. That might give you an idea of how well you'll do.

I actually am the Assessment Administrator at a Technical College and we administer the Accuplacer for all of our new Applicants.
The test is adaptive. There are two parts to English, (reading and sentence skills-both parts are 20 questions), you have to score high enough on the Reading portion for the computer to give you the second part. Both scores in this area can reach over 100....there is NO part of the test that is based on 100%.
The math is adaptive as well, most students I see end up getting the Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra portions and RARELY do I see a student do well enough on these to get into the College Math portion.
But I can't stress enough.....you can score over 100 on these tests because it's not based off of 100.
Our typical entrance scores are:
Reading 55-66
Sentence 60-76
Arithmetic 36-63
Algebra 64+
All students falling into these ranges will get accepted, if they score higher than the minimum, it just places them into a higher level class. It's not necessarily something you need to study for, it's just a placement tool to place you into your courses.

did I read a previous post correctly in that the Math portion only had 12 questions ?
Bergen Community College in NJ uses the Accuplacer.
