Hi, I was just interested in regard to an experience I had in clinical the other day. I am an LPN student and we had a pt w/a prolapsed rectum. This pt is a retired RN and wanted everyone of the students to see what had happened to her rectum. She said that not every one gets to see one or have heard of it. I gather this is not a common occurance, can anyone share what they know? Thanks!

Once a nurse, always a teacher!!
Isyorke, The thing that amazed me that in all her agony and pain, she was asking us students if we had any questions. I was totally amazed by her willingness to share in order for us to learn. :thankya:

I saw the repair of a prolapsed rectum. The MD shortened the rectum and tightened the muscles. Surgery has a high failure rate.

Do you know a specific percentage?

I saw one in a rape victim once, it's not a pretty picture.

:rotfl: I don't know that this is so un-common.I've seem many (and several prolapsed uterus (uteri?) in pts that were not good surgical candidates....I also found a kitten yrs ago with a prolapsed rectum-the vet took a few stitches across her rectum and I had to feed her a liquid diet for several weeks-when she pooped it looked like 2 piles of softserve ice cream. She lived to be 15 but she always had little 'rhoids. When they flared up she would get up on the roll top desk and rub her butt on it.....Then we'd get out the Prep H....
:chuckle LOL! Just the picture of someone trying to hold down a cat and put Preparation H on its hemorrhoids....oh my!

Yes, I have seen a prolapsed rectum. Something I will never forget. This patient was elderly and I cared for her the day before repair scheduled. She was drinking Go-lytely, was on the BSC, and had either a syncopal or near-syncopal episode!
