Happy Flippin' Nurse's Day

Published

Wow. The company I work for used to be really good about treating nurses well during nurse's week. One year they hired a massage therapist to give 15 minute chair massages. Then one year they bought us lunch. Well this year.....a blood drive was organized.....for us nurses to donate to. Free food for those who donate. Is it just me, or is that pretty....ummmm.....what's the word....CRAPPY? I guess the bad economy is their excuse....Are there ANY decent places to work????

We got a muffin, a cup of fruit, a cranberry juice, and a breakfast taco for breakfast. ( I heard that last year it was made to order omlettes)

For a gift we got a fanny pack thing you can use for workouts...I kept the pen and post-it note pad that was inside. :)

Nothing makes people complain more than getting something for free!!

I tend to disagree that this is "for free."

I believe that we, to at least some degree, earn a little recognition, a little thanks.

Seriously, we ARE THE HOSPITAL!

Perhaps I'm being selfish, but I have given so much to my healthcare system over the years. I'm not looking for handouts, but the occasional "attagirl" would be nice.

~ I haven't had a family dinner since Christmas 2008, or attended a family reunion since 2007

~ I was kicked in the head by a patient and given a concussion

~ I can't count the times I've also played escort, unit clerk, tech, dietary staff, etc.

~ I spent six nights of one week at my hospital because of inclement weather this year

~ I've been told by management that I am given harder assignments on purpose for the sake of the unit (over less strong nurses)

I accept all of this, and I actually don't mind...but not once have I been thanked or even acknowledged for any of the above.

And in no way am I saying that I am more deserving of recognition than others; in fact, we all have reasons why we are great nurses and our employers should be grateful for our service. Because, beloved, there are some things money doesn't buy...

We got a fruit platter to share .. woo hoo ...

every year admin. asks for suggestions & ideas and every year they ignore them & do the same old thing- lots of fattening food- (we call it 'carb week') & some crappy lunch bag, chintzy key ring, etc. w/the hospital logo. Get a CLUE!! Half the time we can't get to lunch & we'd rather have a gift certificate towards a massage, spa, restaurant, even the grocery store!! --or better yet CA$H! Hello?

Nurse's Day is enough, when did it get to be "Nurse's WEEK"? Being acknowledged in a professional way on one day would mean a lot more than a week full of crap food & cheap trinkets!! All we'd like on our unit is to have the Nurse Admin. & Nurse Managers relieve us for a one hour lunch!!! (Bets are they couldn't handle it!!) :twocents:

My agency didn't even say it. Not even a happy nurses day insert in our paychecks.

Do we work at the same place?? We did, however, get a bunch of flowers from the hospital board to all staff for hospital week. A simple Thank you would be welcome, especially when we have all been picking up extra shifts and working like mad for the past 6 weeks. We are 3 night nurses down, that is a lot for a rural hosp.

Maybe an email would be nice...haha...easy enough, but someone would have to do it.

HAH! I got zilch! We got a balloon and a poster for the station. a Ice cream bar for one day.

Trivia in the cafe(like I have time to go there at all during my shift), the chance to win a prize by being raffled, etc....total crud!

at least last year I gave my fiancee my manicure set(which as a male, I really have no use for.)

I laugh....at least my mom wished me a happy nurses day! and my fiancee cooked me dinner!

However, what used to be "Nurses' Week" is now "Great Place to Work Week."

LOL, why don't they just say what they mean and call it "you-are-lucky-to-have-a-job-in-this-economy Week" Geesh!

I am blessed to work in the most amazing job. Please don't hate me... We got pizzas for the weekend shifts, massages, recognition ceremony with all out buffet, gift cards and .....a raise! :yeah:

My LTC facility didn't even acknowledge Nurses Day/Week..they are too busy billing out National Nursing Home week which runs 5/9 to 5/15! And all those "festivities" gifts, and thanks are going to the residents and their families..oh, but staff is welcome to attend...

I don't need stuff....but a thank you would be nice every once in a while and an acknowledgement that gee, maybe it is tough watching people die day in and day out. The only time I hear from my manager is when something goes wrong. As my husband says, there are good places to work, but they're not the ones hiring....

We got two bags in the ICU...each contained a snack pack of Cheez-Its, a package of Starburst, Stride gum, ad a bag of pretzels. And the people we rent our bariatric beds brought it. And there were 12 nurses per shift.

gifts are always nice...seems the bariatric bed folks are looking to drum up a bit of business...since being in good health is VITAL to being able to function as a nurse, how about some healthy stuff...
