What to you like about being a nurse?
I like being a nurse when my patient says to me "I'm really glad you're my nurse today. You are really easy to talk to and you seem to get me". I'm a psych nurse and any day I can stop my patients suiciding is a great day! I also like it when my team leader says it's time to go home!

Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!
NO! you don't get to ignore me or talk over the top of me when I'm asking if anyone needs help and then run to the boss whingeing that no one ever helps you! And while we're at it, whoever told you that green hair is attractive was WRONG!! You might like that music that sounds like someone is killing a cat but we work on a psych ward!! This is NOT good for client relaxation ..

Such a bad rap
Can we not have a ***** session about this? Yes those jobs are dangerous but they are usually freak accidents. Nurses and police officers get hurt more frequently from what I have seen.

very little patient interaction
Like GoldenGirl22, I spend most of my shift with the patients so I can assess their mood, and get a fix on how they are travelling that day but there are some of the staff who have little contact.

Blood, Bodily Fluids and Germs OH MY!
"Originally Posted by Lisa, MA Those of you who don't shower after work or change clothes, I have to wonder what school you went to." AS a previous poster said, the same kind of school you went to and yes, we learned all about germs there but seeing as I choose not to live in a bubble I'm not anal about it. I work in mental health and we do not wear uniforms, just regular clothes. I don't change when I get home unless I've been dealing with someone who is withdrawing and may have puked on me, which is an extremely rare occurrence. My kids are vaccinated, my house is clean but they still get sick from time to time. Going to school, the supermarket or a friend's house exposes them to germs. You can't hide from them all.

What I really think of nursing
your post is really difficult to read.

*Vent* RN's make toast?!?!?!
It's probably because the management got sick of complaints of cold soggy toast being served and they figured that if the nurses do it the toast would be fresh. I can see their point but that doesn't make it right. We go to nursing school not chef school!

I got my dream job!
As a mental health nurse!! I'm absolutely ecstatic I've been trying desperately for a psych job since I finished school and kept getting told that I needed a minimum of 2 years experience in an acute ward BEFORE I could work in psych. I was so bummed out by that but now I'm over the moon and still don't have that 2 years acute experience! It's an open psych unit, that can become a lock down unit if necessary. Now I just have to get my psych terminology up to speed. Cheers Chris :w00t:
