  1. why do you give a chemo drug to ectopics? Sorry, I'm a psych nurse and don't know much about ob.
  2. I like being a nurse when my patient says to me "I'm really glad you're my nurse today. You are really easy to talk to and you seem to get me". I'm a psych nurse and any day I can stop my patients suiciding is a great day! I also like it when my team leader says it's time to go home!
  3. NO! you don't get to ignore me or talk over the top of me when I'm asking if anyone needs help and then run to the boss whingeing that no one ever helps you! And while we're at it, whoever told you that green hair is attractive was WRONG!! You might like that music that sounds like someone is killing a cat but we work on a psych ward!! This is NOT good for client relaxation ..
  4. My son's paediatrician is DR Smiley and my grandfather's surgeon was Dr Butcher.
  5. Can we not have a ***** session about this? Yes those jobs are dangerous but they are usually freak accidents. Nurses and police officers get hurt more frequently from what I have seen.
  6. Like GoldenGirl22, I spend most of my shift with the patients so I can assess their mood, and get a fix on how they are travelling that day but there are some of the staff who have little contact.
  7. You get a holiday bonus??? Wowee!!! I've never had such a thing
  8. "Originally Posted by Lisa, MA Those of you who don't shower after work or change clothes, I have to wonder what school you went to." AS a previous poster said, the same kind of school you went to and yes, we learned all about germs there but seeing as I choose not to live in a bubble I'm not anal about it. I work in mental health and we do not wear uniforms, just regular clothes. I don't change when I get home unless I've been dealing with someone who is withdrawing and may have puked on me, which is an extremely rare occurrence. My kids are vaccinated, my house is clean but they still get sick from time to time. Going to school, the supermarket or a friend's house exposes them to germs. You can't hide from them all.
  9. your post is really difficult to read.
  10. It's probably because the management got sick of complaints of cold soggy toast being served and they figured that if the nurses do it the toast would be fresh. I can see their point but that doesn't make it right. We go to nursing school not chef school!
  11. As a mental health nurse!! I'm absolutely ecstatic I've been trying desperately for a psych job since I finished school and kept getting told that I needed a minimum of 2 years experience in an acute ward BEFORE I could work in psych. I was so bummed out by that but now I'm over the moon and still don't have that 2 years acute experience! It's an open psych unit, that can become a lock down unit if necessary. Now I just have to get my psych terminology up to speed. Cheers Chris :w00t:
  12. Good on you! Ignore them - they don't know what they are missing ... lol ... or maybe they do!! I start my psych ward job on 4th Dec and have also been asked if I'm the one whose nuts. I love mental health nursing! Good luck
  13. Hey Carol I finally got a full time job using a version of your application letter! I start work at Woodleigh House (mental health unit) on 4th Dec. I'm over the moon! Thanks for your help, Chris
  14. Holy crap! You pay $75 for a doctor's visit? Again, I'm so happy I live in Australia.
  15. My son was told when he had leukaemia, but he was only 5 at the time and has Down Syndrome so he didn't totally understand. Personally I think the child should be told because they are going to know they have cancer anyway as soon as their hair starts to fall out. Most kids of 9 would understand that.
  16. We have certain meds that we are allowed to nurse-initiate. They include paracetamol, mylanta, coloxyl (but not senna) and a couple of other things of a similar nature that I can't remember offhand. Anything other than a single dose needs to be ordered by the doctor so if it is an ongoing issue it needs to be written up by the doctor.
  17. I totally agree!! I had one family member come to me and whine about how they couldn't cope at home with the client and then in the next breath complain about the fact that we can't get the client to brush their teeth/eat/drink etc... I really felt like telling them that they were welcome to take the client home again, back to the all the problems they were having with them before.
  18. Vomit gets me almost every time. I don't pass out but join in with the vomiting. A lot of people have a little quirk about some part of their nursing duties, so keep your chin up and remember to breathe!
  19. I'm curious to know how you got workers comp for a pregnancy. It may well work differently in the USA to what it does here (Australia), but our workers comp is for people who injured themselves while at work and pregnancy certainly is not a workplace injury.
  20. I fully agree. If they can do the job, good on them. If they are beginning to slip and can't quite make the grade, then and only then, should they be looking at retiring.
  21. Are you showing yet? They may work it out for themselves. If you do get the job, I would make a point of telling them that you are coming back to work asap and won't be taking extended maternity leave. If you are only going to be gone for a limited time, it may help to smooth things over.
  22. I'm about to become an aged care nurse. This is not my ideal position but it pays a wage and gives me desperately needed experience - I'm a newbie. I would love to work in mental health but I think that's a little while off at this point
  23. I felt like that when I was working nights and ended up calling in sick more often than not. I work days now and I feel a lot better about going to work now. I wouldn't want to work your schedule either. Too much time off in a row makes me not want to go back to work.
