I'm sorry to bother everyone. I have a friend who is a new nurse. She complains about how often she's required to wash her hands and how she's not allowed to put any lotions on afterwards because it will attract dirt and germs. I am looking to give her some type of moisturizer for her to use and have found Gloves in a Bottle, Barrier Lotion by Dermal Therapy. What do you use to prevent your hands from drying out from overwashing? Would you recommend any of the products that I mentioned? I'd like to order for her christmas present. Thank you for your time.

The Body Shop makes a great Hemp Hand Protector that goes on smooth but lasts a long time through multiple handwashings. It goes on with a nice, clean/natural scent that very quickly dissipates. There's no greasy residue. I keep a tube in my desk drawer all winter long and even have my husband believing in the wonders of the stuff (we like the hemp lip protector and several other of their products as well).
Anyway, the hand protector works as well, if not better, than anything I've ever tried before. If I run out and can't make it to "the city" to The Body Shop and don't have time to wait for mail order, there's an el-cheapo tub of stuff that I got from a drugstore that's called "Udderly Fantastic" or "Udderly Wonderful" in a black and pink package with a picture of a cow on it. It's pretty good as a back-up.

I've had luck using Neutrogena's Hand Cream, unscented. It comes in a little tube, but just a little blob works well, and lasts well through washings. Unfortunately, I frequently find myself in a rush and use a squirt of the hand sanitizer from the wall dispenser in every room, and that leaves your hands slimy with Neutrogena on them. (But our sanitizer also contains a 'moisturizer' that gives you that same icky feeling after a few applications - I wonder if it's not added to give us the incentive to actually wash with water and soap now and then!)
I've tried Gloves In a Bottle and found it worked well, but the Hand Cream leaves my hand a lot softer.

Each night before your head hits the pillow, put on a dab of Nivea cream (in the tube) and massage in. If you do this each night, it re-moisturizes your hands well enough to endure many many handwashings during the day. A tube next to the computer or in the purse is also handy to use when you get a period of time where you won't need to wash your hands every 15 minutes or less.

The BEST lotion I have found is a product called Caren. It is WONDERFUL!! I too have dry hands from washing all day and my husband is a Paramedic and washes his hands alot too, he actually took my lotion!!! It has a very light scent or you can get the no scent as well. It does not leave your skin greasy, I have tried Neutrogena and believe it leaves my skin a bit greasy. It stays on for a long time too!!
The website is:

They are located in Atlanta Georgia!! Great stuff!:rotfl:

Bag Balm, apply at night. If needed, apply then put gloves on while you sleep.
(this is my husband's recommendation...doesn't like using lotion during the day, hates the feel on his hands...is washing constantly during the day, tho.)

Interesting...last I heard, hand lotions were being recommended for use by those who wash their hands frequently in order to preserve the integrity of the skin and avoid potential infections.
Lotions with any sort of petroleum products cannot be used at work due to the potential for latex breakdown. The leaves out the Vaseline lotion line. A number of hospitals use lotions with silicone, which do last longer. Both Avon & Mary Kay have very good silcone-based lotions. Which reminds me, I need to purchase some!

I have eczema and my dermatologist recommended Cetaphil cream. The have the lotion and facewash but he said to use the cream on my hands. I love it. Since I have sensitive skin some products with fragrences and certain chemical can cause me to get a itchy cracked skin rash like thing on my fingers but the cetaphil doesn't. I got mine in a big tub at Target but I'm sure they would carry it at other stores. I got a lot of my friends hooked on it too now.

There are antibacterial lotions. However, the only ones I've seen are at the hospital. I'm sure that they sell some in the store. I like Avons Moisture Therapy Hand Cream for extra dry skin. It goes on like a paste more than a lotion. It also lasts longer than lotion in keeping your hands well moisturized. It's important to apply hand cream at night too. It works better that way for me.

I totally agree- Our hospital just put in the alcohol sanatizers, while I found them really easy to use, they are awfully drying- Bath and Body works puts out an antibacterial hand gel that has little beads of moisturizer in them- My hands feel so nice, I don't need to put on the added lotion. :kiss
It's not that my friend cannot use hand lotion. It's that when she's volunteering at the hospital, after she washes her hand, she's not allowed to use any type of moisturizer. I'm sure that when she gets home, she slaters on moisturizer. The Glove in a Bottle I found helps keep moisture in your hands throughout the day due to the frequent hand washing and thus the name Glove in a Bottle because it's like an invisible glove.
Thank you all for your post. I have many options now.
