Hi all!
So the MCCDNP site says "Spring capacities choice change options should become available late in September."
Well, I called today to see when they are expecting to release the choice options because it's already getting pretty late in September - they told me late OCTOBER!
Pushing back the date and picking 2 months before nursing school starts seems a little unprepared and unorganized to me.
I was at a nursing event last night at GCC just to see if there is anything I am missing, and I expressed that same frustration. I mean, they spoke to a young woman who did not realize that she would have to do the "dirty work"- like wiping butts, bathing patients, and cleaning up bodily fluids. They said she looked bewildered, and dropped after the second day. THOSE folks are the ones who REALLY frustrate me. Here's me at the starting line, and they get in, clueless if this is something that they even want to do. So selfish.Another frustration is that prerequisite courses for different schools do not match. For example, ASU requires more than GCU requires, and both require more than MCCCD does. They all are governed by the AZ State Board of Nursing. Why can't they all just match up a little more? That way if someone is sick of waiting and wants to just go for their BSN, they can do this with minimal effort. It would take people off of the waiting lists
even more.
Maybe I am being irrational and venting, but I am a forward thinker.:thankya:
Before you even apply, there should be a mandatory video..."A Day in the Life of Nurse". I know this would only add another Pre-req to the list, but it may "weed" people out a whole lot better in the long run! Nursing is by far NOT a glamorous job! I have questioned myself at times if I really want to do this. But, I have a specific goal in mind. That far out weighs any apprehension! Butt-wiping or NO but-wiping....
The ones that irritate me are the ones that accept a spot in the upcoming class and then don't show up to orientation or first day of class. My friend waited for over a year to get in. She got called the day AFTER orientation because two people didn't show up. She scrambled around, got registered, got her uniforms, got her life in order because three days later class started. Everything's ok but her family is still adjusting to the abrupt start.
I think there ought to be some sort of video/orientation/introduction that all applicants must watch or complete before their application is accepted. They need to be told what the expectations are of them for school, in the job, etc. That alone would weed out the ones that aren't serious or haven't a clue of what the job entails. I also agree that by cutting back on the pre-reqs, it's not setting these folks up for success. I had to have Nutrition and boy, I have used that knowledge SO many times. I can't imagine not having taken that. Math, BIO 201 and 202 and pathophysiology are all extremely important to doing the job of nursing.

How about a non-refundable deposit???LOL The only reason I gripe about the math is that part of my brain doesn't like math....I know I will get it figured out though!

I totally agree. This is something I want to do but since I dont come from a medical background I still wonder, "what is it really like?" There is very little guidance from the schools or assistance with understanding the nursing program or what the real nursing job is like. I have had to rely on a lot of second hand info and hope my instincts are right. (btw thanks to everyone who contributes on this board) :loveya:
Here's my 2 thoughts:
1.They should give placement weight to prior medical experience, like having your CNA. It shouldn't be mandatory, but it should help you placed. I think that would weed out the non butt-wipers....
2. I was thinking about those people that are applying now under the new pre-req/co-req rules, and the outrageous number of reserved spots for employees. With the added SCC ones at the last minute, there was less than 400 availble for regular waitees. So, here's what I came too:
1 Semester to take pre-reqs and then apply
5 Semester wait while taking co-reqs (2200+ people for 400 seats a semester)
4 Semsters to complete the Nursing Program
10 semesters total = 5 years for a 2 year degree!!!!! Thats INSANE!!!
On the bright side, I believe that many of the people who are clogging up the waiting list right now are going to drop off or be kicked off the list due to not completing the bio reqs .
I already know of a few people who got onto the waiting list but could not get thru Micro (despite best efforts) and are trying for the second time. People like this are on the list but shouldn't be because they will fail nursing school if they can't get thru basic classes like this.....
Yet another reason why MCCD is not on my list of "favorites".
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU WHO FINALLY MADE IT:yeah:
Now, for a little info for those going into block 1. PLEASE STUDY HARD. If you do not pass block 1, you have to get back in line. I would hate for you guys to wait this long just to have to go back. Process is the hardest. If any of you have NCLEX books that is great and if you don't GET THEM. Process questions has 4 multiple choice, all of them could be and usually are right, you have to pick the best one. We started with 48 and we ended up with 37. It is not easy. They tell you at orientation, if you do not have to work DON'T.
I don't want to bust anyone's bubble, but just a warning. Hope to see you at SCC.

That is why Ethel Bauer isn't looking too bad right now.....You'd be in and out in 2 years or so....and be making good money!
