Group One background checks in Texas

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I have been put into group one, which is a reporting agency that allows other healthcare facilitys to see why I was terminated. I was not given a chance to resign before termination. My question is, can I request to have it changed? Is this a type of discrimination? all this is making me want to get out of healthcare all together, seems like i will allways have a disadvantage being a guy and all.

One way we RN's can stand against agencies like Group One and the vagaries of incompetent nurse managers and administrators is for those of us who are "travelers" to refuse to take any assignments in Dallas/Ft. Worth and communities that utilize "Group One".

It is the only power we have since the TX BON focus is negative toward RN's.

Ahhhhh, but if you are a traveler you bypass group one and can be hired at the very hospital which would deny you employment if you were to apply for a staff position; and, at a much higher rate of pay than staff. In fact, pretty much close to the rate you find at the higher paying cities in the US. Kind of makes the hospitals pay the nurse more for the honor of being blacklisted. There is no Group One check unless the travel company is part of the DFW Hospital Assoc. because the traveler is an employee of the travel company and not the DFW area hospital they will work at. I think that instead of boycotting group one hospitals, the area nurses should sign up as travelers (for local travel and pay taxes on the housing subsidy)-think of how much extra it would cost the hospitals;and, the travel company could be the nurse advocate if the assignments were jeopardizing the nurses license (sort of like union representation without a union involved).

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to sign up with a travel company that had contracts and work local, they wouldn't take me. They said that the hospitals were looking for TRAVELERS, not someone from the local area working through a travel company. They said that I had to live at least 100 miles from the hospital to be considered a traveler before the hospital would even look at my resume. Doesn't make sense to me, but that was what they told me.

We have property in Florida and a PO box that forwards to us wherever we are. We use that for all/most of our travel nurse correspondence(sp?). Unfortunately when we buy our house in TX in '08 we have to reconfigure a few things. A little off topic but if you have family 100 miles away or own property... I'm all for sticking it to group one and getting around them the way they managed to get around laws instituted to protect former employees from this type of garbage. They suck for lack of a better term.

Speaking from personal experience-try to find another travel company. PM me if you would like to discuss this further.

Sorry - but nurses are pretty much stuck with this in DFW. The only way to fight it is to access your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Refusing to work for a facility who uses it is cutting your nose off to spite your face and pointless.

You can dispute the information and the reporting party has to respond within a certain time frame. You also have the right to have your own response comments added.

They also have to give you a free copy of your report every so often (annually?) even if the report didnt cause you to be denied employment or credit.

Learn the fair credit reporting act and go from there. That's how they operate, that's the only way to fight back.

I see your point but, it's pretty outrageous that the burden is put on YOU to fight this ... especially in situations where you did nothing wrong in the first place.

It easily creates a situation where you're presumed guilty until proven innocent.

So nurses have to constantly check their Group One reports and constantly challenge unfounded allegations made against them? What proof/evidence do they have and how do you prove them wrong if they're prone to siding with the hospital managers anyway?

If all you can do is add your response to unfounded allegations .... seems to me that the damage is already done anyway.

BTW ... I found this thread on another message board where someone who worked for one of the Dallas hospitals defends Group One practices.

No, they are only used by hospitals in the DFW area.

Currently, Group One says they have 350 member hospitals so ...

Unless there's 350 hospitals in Dallas, seems to me that they've already expanded to other areas.

Just FYI.

Thanks Kelly, it's still not 350 but I guess if they add in all the affiliated centers it very easily could be.

Hi, I too have been threatened with the Group one thing. I had to leave for a family emergency and requested a change to prn with an angry no answer. I gave a notice of 13 days not 14 still working a 2 week schedule in that 13 days. Six 12hrs shifts. I was told and also read in your comments that you can do a check on your own record. But I am still in the dark on how to do it or who to contact. Would appreciate any information on how to do this. I am curious. They seem to be very vindicitive on nurses in state of TX. What is the deal? and What is going on here?
