So today I was emptying my patient's recently revised colostomy drainage...And I removed about a pound of what looked like pot roast, along with peas and cucumber seeds. I didn't freak out in front of him, but on the inside I was gagged and trying not to freak out. I've seen lots of other really "gross" things and not even flinched, but for some reason that almost did me in.
So now I need to know... what's the grossest thing you've ever seen?
Okay, see..this is what I fear the most. Projectile. Geez.
yup def with you on that, i will take poop, bugs, wounds, sputum, trachs, anything BUT VOMIT! IT IS AWFUL.....i dont know how i made it this far in nursing but thank god i have great co workers who know that is my weakness...
but other then anything that deals with vomit is my grossest ever
but a gross one for my co-workers was...... i was washing an incontinent c diff pt for the 5th time...and rolled her over on her side....and she had EXPLOSIVE c-diff diarrhea all over me.....thank god i had the gown for contact prec on....but it still dripped down the gown onto my pants onto my shoes and socks!...needless to say i had to borrow some OR scrubs and went around in treded slippers the rest of the night HA HA HA...but since then my co workers assign me every c diff patient on the floor if i am on....cause they figure i can hadle that better then they if it happened again...LOL:p
I am an anti-mucus/phelgm/snot person too...I can handle a LOT but anything of that nature just makes me gag.
I can't think of anything all that good right now, but the corn I emptied out of my patients ileostomy bag last night (that also exploded all over everything, including her midline wet-to-dry dressing....yea, sterile technique was kind of a waste of time and resources!) was bad enough for this week.
Okay. I cannot be a nurse. I think I'm going to consider a career in...landscaping...or something now.
You can get sicker and involved with yuckier stuff in landscaping....think about tetorifice immunizations, fungal infections and various forms of manure used for fertilizer.....Just thinkin'
I went in with a Surgeon once who was evaluating testicular necrosis, and when he pulled up the patients "netherregions" a foul smell emitted causing the surgeon to jump back and yell "good God"!! I asked him "R U OK?" HEHEHEHEHe!!
:yeah:That was HILARIOUS! Thanks for my LOL of the day...I needed those endorphins!
My 6yo watching some medical show on TV turned to me and in allseriousness stated, "Dad I know why you wear those mask things....so you dont have to smell the blood." I am sorry to say that I couldn't dsillusion him.
My worst so far was a LOL who just had a gastroscopy due to bleeding ulcers. On RTW I rolled her to place a pad on when I saw a huge lump of what looked like stirred up jelly, raspberry and black cherry in colour. I was fine except for the amount, there was literally 1.5 Litres. So being a good nurse I had to call my In-charge and show her as a thankyou.
