Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Hey Prism! When I write my paper I do give credit by using quotation marks and providing in-text citations. It is so annoying when I see that red, because I am following the APA guidelines. I'm sure I will get it together, sooner than later I hope. But how are you, and what class are you in? I start Family-Centered today with an instructor I know nothing about.

Yes you have been MIA for awhile! I start Ethics next Monday, also an instructor I've never heard of but I'm winging it - sometimes things work out better that way in the end (fingers crossed for this one).

Regarding APA, what are you using for your instruction manual/tips/hints/resource? Quotation marks are reserved for when you are literally taking something word for word from someone else's work. It's been hinted to me (from instructors here & there) that the occasional "quote" is fine, but the fewer the better. Lots of references, but very few actual quotations. Does that make sense? The OWL website is extremely helpful, and I also bought the 6th ed. APA (blue) book. It takes awhile to get it all, I still have not "gotten it" and still refer to both about 50x per paper!

I have the APA blue book and I am using PERRLA. I hope these tips I'm getting help me. I managed to get an A in my first class and would like that continue, but I will happily take a B too. Thanks for your tips:up:

I'm glad my work is being understanding! I asked for an extra week off, she put it on the calendar but also wants to know what the dr says next week when i can return to full duty. If I had known this was going to happen I don't know that I'd have had the surgery! Such a stupid thing too, the staple gun malfunctioned. Who does that happen to?! Me, of course. My dr felt horrible. I don't blame him, it's not his fault, but he's not my favorite person right now because I also have a JP drain and want it out but he says no, next week:madface::banghead: it's so uncomfortable! And my poor hubby, who hates anything nursing like, has to help me. He has to help me change the dressing on my drain, hook me up to the TPN and disconnect me as well. Stupid stapler:(

The Organizational Values PPT in the Leadership class. I didn't tell her I was having surgery, didn't want that to be an excuse or anything, ya know? I'm even home with a picc line and TPN, 18 hrs a day for the next week*sigh* this did not go as planned.

Good heavens! I don't think it's an excuse, it's reality. I do understand though. When I received my grade back on my paper I wrote when so sick with campylobacter, the professor was like WTH was that, because this paper was not obviously as good as my previous one. I sent her a pm and apologized and explained how sick I had been. She told me if I needed some extra time to let her know. I didn't use it as an excuse, but just kept on going and turned things in on time. It was nice to know she had my back though and understood. She even sent me a pm a week later to see how I was feeling. :)

Holy cow! That just sounds awful! I didn't know a staple gun could cause that many problems! Yikes!

My biggest concern was something awful was going to happen and I would not be able to finish.

Big healing hugs to you!

Sometimes the 2 week maximum to take off between classes is not enough. I am starting my 3rd class today Health Assessment and I have no choice but to push on. In the last month, laid off from work, landlords want to sell our home (their house) so we are moving, my 11 yr old son just got diagnosed with IBD or Colitis, and I got sick last Friday. Hey on the upside, I am starting to feel better. I am ready for 2015 to be here and put this way too busy year behind me. So my Health assessment instructor has made it clear in every announcement post I could find that she is big on APA references.. I get it.. She is already stressing me out.

You need a BIG umbrella to block all that is raining down on you! I hope the IBS/colitis is easily managed and you find a house soon. Oh and a job you like. Big hugs to you too! You and sunshine really need them. :(

Did you new instructor mention the APA in her announcements? Remember, if you don't like what you read, then don't post and call an advisor and get switched!

What is her APA deal? I hope not the one that gives zero's and then deducts 20% with a resubmission.

What class and power point?

I hope the instructor gives you some leeway since you were ill. Poor thing. I hope you are feeling better!

fingers crossed for a decent grade. That was a not-so-fun power point.

Thanks tokmom, I PM you back. Because of your suggestions I purchased both PERRLA and Grammarly. I did not know Grammarly had a feature to recommend different words. I must not be using it right lol And I have been using the Thesaurus on my Mac.

Do you run a spell check and grammar check with grammarly? Do you have the program on your laptop as an add-on?

I so so agree with this (jeez I fee like I'm writing a DQ :rotfl:)

TII is smarter than I originally gave it credit for, I thought it was just checking for plagiarism but as tokmom says, it's similarity. Rearranging the sentence doesn't work! I finally learned what works for me: Read what ever the source said. Close my eyes, think about what they actually MEANT, not what they said, and write that. Then in-text citation it (`cause ya gotta give credit), and poof, you're done. I used to really stress over TII scores close to 20 (once you get a 4%, you're pretty much spoiled after that), but then I realized that it is a research paper, after all, it's not "creative writing", I had to get info to support my points from somewhere, and that's why they allow up to 20%. That's what I think anyway :twocents:

Oh, and yeah, thesaurus.com is up and running on every single paper, for sure!

According to the APA folk, 20% is what they deem acceptable, hence GCU using this as a guideline.

(the things that take up space in my brain.. like this is useful information! :cyclops:)

Be very careful with quotations/citations. Some instructors will ding you for that, because they feel it's not in your own words.

No doubt, it would be difficult. I was happy with the 15 months that it took me! I think doubling up on the last few classes would be much easier than the first though, which is why GCU doesn't let people double until well into the program.

Interesting I did not know that...although I have found more time with this class, so maybe it is because you get into a groove (insert some slick emotie here, that I will get in 6 weeks :cheeky:)
