Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
Thanks tokmom, I PM you back. Because of your suggestions I purchased both PERRLA and Grammarly. I did not know Grammarly had a feature to recommend different words. I must not be using it right lol And I have been using the Thesaurus on my Mac.
OMG miss writing papers, what?!? I do not think ever in this lifetime would such words come out of my mouth. LOL
You can cite, but the score is picking up too much of similarity. What you need to do is read and then take what you read and put it in your own words. Also using a thesaurus helps too. Do you have Grammarly? It helps lower the score because it will recommend different words to use. :)
I so so agree with this (jeez I fee like I'm writing a DQ :rotfl:)
TII is smarter than I originally gave it credit for, I thought it was just checking for plagiarism but as tokmom says, it's similarity. Rearranging the sentence doesn't work! I finally learned what works for me: Read what ever the source said. Close my eyes, think about what they actually MEANT, not what they said, and write that. Then in-text citation it (`cause ya gotta give credit), and poof, you're done. I used to really stress over TII scores close to 20 (once you get a 4%, you're pretty much spoiled after that), but then I realized that it is a research paper, after all, it's not "creative writing", I had to get info to support my points from somewhere, and that's why they allow up to 20%. That's what I think anyway
Oh, and yeah, thesaurus.com is up and running on every single paper, for sure!
Then I get worried that it will not be scholarly enough or the instructor will tear it to stress just because it might be obvious that I do not like writing papers.
It's kind of a shame that we are such perfectionists and put so much stress on ourselves to get it 100% right the first time (I think it might be part of our nurse-DNA?). I do try to remember that this is school, I'm here to learn, and of course I'm not necessarily going to write scholarly right out of the gate because this is my first stab at undergrad. And when they tear my papers to shreds (which they definitely have), once I get past the sting of it, I'm grateful because hey, I just learned something new, and I'll incorporate that into my next paper. Well, that's after I check their corrections against my APA manual of course, I want to make sure the instructor was right! Now that I think about it, I do want to emphasize that. Take the comments as a learning experience and LOOK THEM UP and confirm! Don't just take their word for it - I've had more than one occasion where I got docked for something, looked it up in my current 6th ed. APA manual, and low & behold the instructor actually did not have it right. I've never gone back and said "Um, yeah-huh, go look at pg. 142", not worth it IMO. I always think looking stuff up helps knowledge "stick" anyway
Hey Prism! When I write my paper I do give credit by using quotation marks and providing in-text citations. It is so annoying when I see that red, because I am following the APA guidelines. I'm sure I will get it together, sooner than later I hope. But how are you, and what class are you in? I start Family-Centered today with an instructor I know nothing about.
What class and power point?I hope the instructor gives you some leeway since you were ill. Poor thing. I hope you are feeling better!
The Organizational Values PPT in the Leadership class. I didn't tell her I was having surgery, didn't want that to be an excuse or anything, ya know? I'm even home with a picc line and TPN, 18 hrs a day for the next week*sigh* this did not go as planned.
I would say I spend about 20 hours a week on class work and papers. But I'm only in th 3rd week of my second class. So....it is doable!!!
Sometimes the 2 week maximum to take off between classes is not enough. I am starting my 3rd class today Health Assessment and I have no choice but to push on. In the last month, laid off from work, landlords want to sell our home (their house) so we are moving, my 11 yr old son just got diagnosed with IBD or Colitis, and I got sick last Friday. Hey on the upside, I am starting to feel better. I am ready for 2015 to be here and put this way too busy year behind me. So my Health assessment instructor has made it clear in every announcement post I could find that she is big on APA references.. I get it.. She is already stressing me out.
jjPedsRN I really do hope things get better for you and your family. And wow what teacher is that so I can stay away from her? I am starting my second class today.
OMG SunshineDaisy I hope you get better soon. I don't think you being ill is an excuse, you cannot control that.

I don't think any of us like writing papers, but it's a necessary evil. I can pretty much bet though your writing will improve and it will become easier.
I hate to say this..but I sort of miss it....I have a few papers and power points that I'm proud of. :)
