Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
That is a great topic! I may just have to be a copycat :)Now it seems some instructors actually require you to go out and actually present, while I've read that others are fine with not presenting to a goup. What's up with that? I'd like the name of the instructors that don't require it please lol. For those that have to present, can you present to any group of people, or are there specifics, and how do the instuctors actually know??
I think they all require you to present whether people do...I had to get permission to do this venue because it wasn't listed on the approved list. But at least it will be one on one. Just be careful of the pre-teaching experience paper no where does it say anything about the 11 FHP of the community until you get to the rubric! It is not even a section on their form. I'm guessing a few are going to miss some points over that! Ok off we go....(that sounds so much better when riding the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland)!

They have changed the class in the past year, the people that you read previously that didn't have to physically go do it is because last year the project was a CLC. Being a CLC, and since it's an online atmosphere where typically all your CLC mbrs are reside in different states, it wasn't possible. Now it's an individual assignment (with still all the same assignment requirements!), which is what makes the class so darn busy - used to be you did your piece of the CLC (which was no easy-peasy thing to begin with), now every single student does the whole thing themselves from beginning to end AND presents it .
Mine was on "Health & Weight Status", so I was already able to use a lot of the resources I had used from the HealthyPeople 2020 project. Didn't help tons though, still had to write the papers, create the flyer, show it to and get the signed attestation sheets from providers, etc. It's a LOT of work. The presentation itself is the easy part, can be anywhere practically: a study group, a kindergarten class (hand-washing), a small group of work peers, youth group, etc.
My brain is fried tonight after doing the community presentation stuff today, I present tomorrow at a community fair, just shoot me now! It's on smoking cessation.
Hi WinterWhite, not to add to your stress and work LOL, but in your research did you run across the hot-new-topic of "third-hand smoke"? It's relatively new but there is research out there, it's new stuff that people haven't heard about before & would definitely wow your audience. It's a real eye-opener for people who think they can air out a room, not smoke in their house for a couple days and it'll be fine, or toss the cigarette out the car window before they go visit their grandbabies and they'll be fine... NOPE. It clings to walls, furniture, surfaces, your clothes, your hair, and you can't just wash it off. Appears to be emerging as just as big of danger to little ones as 2nd-hand smoke, since they touch all those surfaces again and again and then stick their hands in their mouths. I found it fascinating, that'd be something to draw in your audience with something they've never heard before and who think they're just fine because they thought they were making adequate adjustments in their smoking patterns to protect others in their lives - NOT! Go Research!

YES! Those rubrics are everything, must read, must read, must read. If you notice, the rubrics and assignments seem all confused and intertwined and really don't make much sense - I asked the instructor many questions for clarification, and she did tell me that although they've changed the assignment (to be indiv vs. CLC, see above), the Univ hasn't changed the rubrics yet! It's a jumbled mess, she said they are working on getting the assg/rubrics to match but I guess it's a long process.
I cannot imagine completing that horrible project with no help. Like Prism said, even as a CLC it was awful!

I got lucky being a Case Mgr. I cover post partum at times, and have to give the third hand talk to the smoking parents. I had so much info to put on that little tiny pamphlet I did a blurb on second and put a bow on it. I'm done with week 5 except writing the final evaluation paper. I'm going to be using a lot of stuff from the pre-paper I sure hope that is ok. Not like I can come up with that much new stuff on the same community ect.

I cannot imagine having to do 2 CLCs in one 5 week period. I might shoot myself. I'm just sure it will happen. At least no one has died yet in this CLC. I'm freaking out because the interviewer gets us her stuff tomorrow and I work the next 3. That will give me two days to work on my 4 slides and then 2 days to do the PowerPoint. I'm going to be a raving lunatic until next Thursday.

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as 2 CLCs, what it is is a 2-part CLC, and I believe I get my first exposure to this in my upcoming class Ethics (soon to start). Right, tokmom?
It really isn't that skerry,. You just have to be organized. I too was terrified. Once I was done with stats, I focused my anxiety on the capstone, lol. The key is getting those research articles a head of time, as well as your PICO. Read the articles, make notes on them (if you print them out). Save the references so you can go back and use them as you write the other papers.
The large paper is written in blocks. You do a bit of paper each week. I think the most difficult part is to not duplicate what you say, because in the end all the papers are put together. In a perfect world, they would fit like a puzzle with all the pieces lined up nicely. However, you do have to cull out some repetitive information so the paper flows better. It IS busy, because you have three assignments due at one time. The lit review is probably the most time intensive assignment, IMO
Great info to know, I need to recall this for when my time comes. Thanks Tokmom.
I started to relax reading....and then thought of capstone, and I still have to do stats next! Ackkkkk........My brain is fried tonight after doing the community presentation stuff today, I present tomorrow at a community fair, just shoot me now! It's on smoking cessation.
Hmm....I am also in at the end of Community Class, this is also week 5 for me. I so get ya WW28.

Yes, sorry to frighten everyone. They are 2 part CLC's. It's ok if you have a good group to work with, otherwise, it's like reliving part I all over again, lol.
Prism. Yes, ethics had a two parter as well. I totally forgot until you mentioned it. It's called selective amnesia!
Pandora and I had a very good group though, only one that stumbled with writing. The most difficult part of the ethics CLC are the ethical dilemma's presented....everyone has to agree. We had one that didn't completely agree, but in light of the project, really tried to have an open mind and write a paper supporting the majorities ethics. It isn't like you have days to debate the topic, so someone has to bend.
