Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
Anybody want to buy a Steel Magnolias DVD cheap?? LOL
I had to rent that bugger from Amazon, because even the library didn't carry it. I hated that movie.
The computer auto-assigns you months in advance (you can check your schedule to see who all they have you set up with for a couple classes down the road). You can ask to be put into (or taken out of) a specific class but when I tried that I was told they couldn't make changes that far in advance, I'd have to wait until a week or two before and do it then. BUT-- if you're trying to go through the program with a buddy, you should both get the same advisor and ask for your schedules to be twinned (I think the class code becomes O191, signifying to the computer/advisors that you are in class with another student). The reason I say you need the same advisor is because they cannot legally speak to you about another student, and if you have 2 different advisors, it's hard to "hint" at who you're talking about and causes great confusion. If it's the same advisor, you can say "you know, my work-buddy that I'm going through the program with" and he/she should have a notation of who that other student is.So yes, get the same advisor and ask for both of you to be put into Miss So-n-So's class beginning 7/21/14.
Some classes have different numbers. The capstone had 0151 and another number with the same instructor. But your classes have to have those three numbers which means you will be in the same class and instructor.
totally agree with the advisor. Pandora and I used her advisor for classes, and I had my own for the basic stuff. Otherwise it becomes too confusing.
ok I'm lost.. which class are you all talking about that you have to watch movies? Do I have to watch steel magnolias or can I pick a different one and how many movies do I have to watch? I feel out of the loop with this movie talk... of course I am getting ready to start my 3rd class..early bird
I am taking community health and there is an assignment on week 2, and then the CLC week 4 (which is a two part), and week 5 has an assignment that is a 3 part. This is a class that could be doubled up on!Ask in your individual forums to be placed in the same CLC, back a bit a group did on the main forum and it did not come across as though the teacher liked that. PM coming your way rainyn and drea588. :)
Thx! I replied.
I had a group ask in the main forum for the class I'm in now. The instructor seemed fine, but it put me off a bit. A bunch of "thank you!" posts, and I'm the sucker that keeps checking them hoping for some useful information lol.
Health assessment is the class.
There are about 8 movies to choose from, give or take one or two. Most are really old. I remember, Lorenzo's oil, steel magnolias, the mask, elephant man, rain man...
What you do is make a power point on the health diagnosis of the movie character. Mine was Steel Mag., and the character had type I diabetes. I felt really sorry for one of the students. She did her power point on The Mask, but did it with Jim Carrey, not the original movie. These power points are made public, so you can look at other's work, which is really interesting. Anyway, she realized what she had done and had to redo the entire thing. No stress there, lol.
Also, this assignment was due in the middle of the week (Thur) with another assignment due on Sunday.

DITTO THAT! I'm the other one checking e v e r y s i n g l e p o s t ... wasting my valuable time reading a "thank you" should be outlawed!

That is my next class! That is good we don't have to watch all 8 movies.. even though I have see them all, I am sure. Those are the type of movies I like but watching 8 would be a bit time consuming.

I also did Steel Mag's, in addition to the ones tokmom listed, there was: Away From Her, My Sister's Keeper, Philadelphia, Stepmom, The Mighty, and The Tic Code. I also got mine off Amazon, couldn't find any of those movies in a real store LOL (I even tried the Wal-Mart $1 bin). I watched it twice - the first time just to see the movie and get familiar, and the 2nd time with a "nursing eye": I had Gordon's 11 written out on a piece of paper and every time I heard something that would fit into one of those 11 I jotted it down under the correct category. Then organized it all into the format for the assignment. I have to admit, it was my favorite assignment to date because I got to get all creative and fun with the powerpoint (I love those things -- eek, did I just say that??!)
Hi all,
Just checking in, I have had access to my Capstone since this past Thursday and handed the last assignment for Trends this past Friday. Capstone is A LOT of information to go through to get your bearings! Wow! I have downloaded everything I could in each week's folders, copied other stuff, made a folder for my research articles (still looking and downloading) and I have downloaded all the teacher's announcements and instructions (she's great!) thanks to tokmom and JRich for the name. I'm going with Bedside report for my project. I'll let you all know how it's going.

Isn't it information overload?! So what will your PICO be with bedside report. Let us know what you find out. I think it would be an interesting topic. You really need to be organized to not go crazy in this class.
