What Members Are Saying (AI-Generated Summary)

Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

@tokmom No I start in June. And all I know myself and a few of my friends only have to take 10 classes after our transcript got reviewed by GCU. Like I said if there was a way for us to get out of Trends and Ethics we would have too because we already took those classes but we can't so we will have to retake 1 of the 2 again. GCU said the minimum amount of credits for a BSN with them requires us to fulfill at least 30 credits. Not sure why its like that for us and not others.

Lucky!! I was originally told I wouldn't have to take ethics cause I took ethics as my community college, but then they made me take it to fulfill my 36 credits at GCU. I would definitely choose ethics out of the two.

I would be so mad if they try and tell me I don't have to take a class then say, Oh yeah you do at the end.

Lucky you, though it probably will still feel like a lifetime of pain.:wacky:

Hi Beauty, this is concerning me a bit and I'd recommend you get clarification (as in - IN WRITING) from your enrollment advisor. It's always always been that the total # of credits to grad w/ BSN is 120, and they would allow up to 84 cr to transfer in, leaving 36 to do at GCU. That's why they call them the 12 "core classes", because they are 3 cr ea x12 = 36. I've heard of applicants having already completed (as you have) certain courses in their ADN/Comm College that were duplicates of something in the 12-core so they were not required to retake them, but were required to take other electives (from a certain list) that would replace them. Point being, they wanted a minimum of 36 cr hrs to be taken at GCU no matter what. I don't know, perhaps it's a money thing, that they wanted 36 cr hr's worth of tuition, even if it meant taking other classes to fill those in. I just looked up the Academic Catalog (current, Summer 2014), and on pg. 110 it still says this:

Degree Requirements:

Total RN to BSN Major: 36 credits

Total Other Transfer, Elective, or Certification Credits: 84 credits

Total Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN): 120 credits

I'm not trying to scare you but unless they've changed the program requirements to allow 90 credits to transfer in (thus making you due only 30), something doesn't sound right. You just really really need to be sure that they have quoted you correctly, and when you're speaking to your advisor, ask them, then, why does the current version of the AC say it's still 36?

@PrismRN, your 100% right. I will get them to put it in writing on Tuesday and explain to me why the AC say something different. I even ask could I take another class to replace Trends and Ethics because I already took both and they said no I have to repeat one of them in order to graduate with GCU.

Good Plan. Like I said, it's not the repeating that is weird, it's the number of credits (30 vs. 36). I could be wrong, because the "84-transferrable" may have something to do with upper vs. lower division courses, and I went to ADN school 20 years ago, so... maybe everything I took back then was considered lower-division, and maybe ADN programs have advanced in their curriculum since then. Meaning you may have taken courses that were more advanced than some of us slightly older students, and maybe they consider those upper-division and allow those to transfer in, giving you 90. I hope that makes sense and I'm not confusing the issue!

I dunno, Prism. Pandora is a new grad and she had to take 36 credits.

Interesting... I just talked to an advisor the other day who said I transferred in 87 credits and only required 11 out of the 12 core courses and nothing else to graduate. I mentioned the 36 credits and they said you had to have 30 credits from GCU for GCU residency. I took an upper level pathophys at a state university so this is the course I am transferring in, in addition to my 84 for RN.

Maybe they changed requirements in the last few months?

I only have to do 11 as well :/ I skipped patho as well because I had taken it previously.

I have to do 12 as well... oh wait, now it is 11 CAUSE I JUST FINISHED MY FIRST CLASS! whoo hoo! Excited about that but depressed that I want to eat all the time now...

jj,

I hear you. I know I put on a few pounds sitting around all day. :( I probably have moved more the last five days than I have in the last 15 months, so hopefully I can lose the weight.
