Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

I have a question to all of you that have either gone to GCU or are currently in GCU. Does it help to take a week off once in a while? I am half way through with the program and really feel like I need a break for a week or two. The stress of statistics wore me out and I have been sick through most of NRS-433V Nursing Research. On the last week of it and there are only two of us in my CLC group. Since in previous projects I have been the one that FOP's (love this phrase by the way) it makes it more stressful. Either we will do really good or fail tremendously.

I am taking a break as we are going back to the US on leave and I want to enjoy my time with my family. Part of my thing is I want to get the BSN done to go on to my Masters to get as much accomplished as I can while we are overseas. Otherwise, I probably would take a week off here and there.

Not to worry, there is no requirement or even (in my experience) a feeling of obligation to do so. There were those "Praise the LORRRRD!" posts but I just cruised right on by those. I couldn't help but think that ppl may be posting that stuff to get some kind of gold star? The Spirituality class is just that - it focuses on individuals' (patients) spirtual side, whatever that may mean to them, and how the nursing profession should acknowledge and respect a patient's individuality as it benefits their healing process. I learned a lot in that class; it was dry but kinda fascinating in a way.

Good to know because I, too, have worried about how I will do in that class.

Yes, there are definitely the "bible thumpers" and you can tell who they are the minute that they post their intro on the Class Wall. They are the ones who post that they love to read but since beginning school only have time for Bible readings or that they are waiting to see where God takes them once they earn their BSN.

I would love to post that I hope God will take me to a magical place where people don't plagiarize and don't just reiterate what other people post in the forum. Or that he will take me to Nirvana where people fix their own errors in group projects, know how to correctly cite and reference, and where someone else will take charge of the power point for a change!! haha

I got fried too, needed breaks. My total program ended up being 21 months because of it! Breaks also depends on whether or not you are private-pay vs. student loans. I was private-pay so I had more freedom. I'll tell you though that the "two week break" isn't as fab as it sounds; if you work fulltime, that break really only affords you that one little weekend in the middle. The first weekend you're still hustling to turn in that last assignment. The 2nd weekend is totally free. The 3rd weekend (just before the next class starts) I never took advantage of because I was perusing the syllabus early trying to get a jumpstart on my DQs. Yes any break is better than no break, but what really re-energized me was the longer ones. You'd need to check with your advisor to get the skinny on that for your individual situation. Good luck, I know I coudn't have done it straight through, I would have either had a stress-induced heart attack or hurt somebody!

I took two, two week breaks too get a certain capstone and research instructor. I'm glad I took them because they did help restore some sanity.

Are you always in the same classes with the first students you start with for the most part?

You may see them off and on. I had one person until stats, and then we parted ways. A few others I saw later on in the program.

I am ending week 2 of leadership and management, and I am really struggling with this class. Abstract concepts and difficult for me anyway, but I also this class out of order, so I don't know if I missed some foundation information from research or ethics. I've managed to not have to read most of the assigned reading for the other 4 classes I've taken, so maybe I just need to pay more attention to the reading. Please someone tell me that this class was the one they struggled with too!

I found myself reading and rereading some parts. The other classes I had an inkling of knowledge. Not in this one, lol.

I thought that class was not what it was cracked up to be. I thought it was going to be on leadership, oh no it's all management, blech!
