Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Last week! Pretty good group for CLC so hoping for a decent grade on that. The assignment aren't super clear for week 5 and asking for clarification the instructor copies and pastes the unclear directions. I will be glad to get this class over with. I noticed somebody mentioned a lengthy paper for the last class. Is there something I should be doing now to make the last class less painful? I have 8 more classes to go. Looking forward to enjoying my free time NEXT SUMMER. ☀️

Once you start research, the instructor will encourage you to start thinking of your PICO and what you want to write for your capstone. I was originally going to heart failure, already having a few articles that would qualify. However, I changed in spirituality when I had to write a paper on burnout and compassion fatigue. About three months prior, I started looking for research articles for my capstone. You need a minimum of 15 peer review with eight being research based (qualitative or quantitative). I also had my PICO completed. I did a print out of the articles so I could highlight and write in the margins. I also colored coded them with sticky dots, lol. Green for peer review and pink for research with qual or quant written on the dot. Yes, I'm very anal! However, it also made it easy to grab the correct article without constantly thumbing through them.

I cannot find Purples original post, but I want to say CONGRATS!!! So what did you think of the capstone?

So happy for you!!!!!!! :w00t::dncgbby::ancong!:

?Thank you! Yeah I Am done! Got an A on that project! ?The class is very busy at first then it gets better, but only one week as you know with only 1 assignment due with all other weeks having 2 or 3. As usual it's best not to overthink the assignments, but that instructor you recommended is really great, she tries to calm everyone from the beginning, my friend and I really loved having her as our instructor.????

This has be mis communication.. why would I not be thrilled with purple mists new appointment?

I feel I was only trying to be a part of the group. I also applauded her for her success... but it seems no one is welcome ..no one is welcome... best to all of you

I must be missing posts, because I did not see purples post of being finished and I don't seen anywhere that said that you didn't applaud her success...

Anyway, Prism was teasing with her imaginary island. We made that up a few months ago to ban those that could whip out a paper in hours and leave us in the dust. It may seem warped to those not familiar with the theme of these threads, but we like to have fun here too. It's our way of relieving stress and supporting each other in a fun way.

I also think she was attempting to be helpful with the fall start date. When I read that, I too was worried you thought you could not start until then. I didn't know that GCU had rolling start dates until I talked to an advisor.

You are more than welcome to hang with us. We are a very supportive bunch and will cheer you on and help with assignment questions when we can.

I wanted to go work at the same hospital where my friend is but was holding off until the end of this program. I didn't want the stress of a new job and school. Free time will now go to relaxing, family time, cleaning house and planning a big vacation for next year since hubby couldn't get away this year.

...because frankly, you're the only people that "get" me these days! I can't wait til next summer too!!!

What a great, supportive group!!

No, nobody told me making myself smarter was a waste of time, nor did they tell me I'm too old. They can bite me anyway, because I don't give a crap what other people think.

If you are experiencing negativity, ignore it. Those that are spewing this negativity to bring you down are not people you want to surround yourself with. These are the type of people that will wait for you to stumble and pounce on you like an injured gazelle on the Serengeti.

I think they are also two things. Ignorant and jealous.

1) They call it busy work and say you need a social life. Well, guess what. Here is a NEWSFLASH PEOPLE: ADN programs are NOT the end all of education. You will be busy, however, you will be learning, more than you thought possible. The adage of "You don't know, what you don't know" fits in this situation. They have NO clue what they are missing educationally. It's an ignorant comment, IMO.

2) They are jealous. Yep..they are too afraid to take the plunge. If they have been out of school for several years like many of us have, it's scary. You are willing to take the risk and earn a degree you have said you want, and the naysayers are sitting on the sidelines wishing it was them.

You are so right. First this comes from people who have other goals and needs in their lives. Some like to think they can solve others people's problems. No one knows anyone else's hopes and dreams. This has always been on my bucket list. I at least want to try. I chuckled at the comment how it is like an overweight person, not wanting a person to diet. LOL! This hits the nail on the head! Thank you all for your comments and support. I like your style. :D

Thanks for the info. I start research after stats. I actually work with a girl who just finished he research class and liked her instructor. I think I will be making a call to my advisor and switching. I can see how having a supportive interactive advisor makes a big difference. I have my fingers crossed my stats instructor is a good one.

I have a friend, 54 yrs old, ADN, has worked in critical care for 25 years, spotless record. Moved to Denver last month. Can't find a job to save her life. With the influx/oversaturation of new grads these days, the hospitals are choosing them (new BSNs) over her. Unless she gets busy and gets her BSN, I imagine her social life is about all she's gonna have to keep her busy.

This is the case for me here in NorCal. I've got 20 years as a psych RN - but many of the decent places to work around here are requiring BSNs now (Stanford, Kaiser, e.g.). I do start with Kaiser tomorrow, actually, at an outpatient chemical dependency clinic. Just mentioning that I was in a BSN program impressed the interviewers. However, it's per diem for the moment - and I met the RN who got the f/t position I wanted . . . she looks to be under 30 yrs old :o

So yeah, nothing stopping me now. I'll be 46 in a few days. I refuse to become irrelevant in my own career specialty!

Just curious if most of you go straight through or if taking breaks is recommended. I plan to go straight through just because I'm looking forward to enjoying next summer without papers looming to be done.

Hi kwmom, I am in the midst of this dilemma right now. I started last July, and not only opted for breaks (2 weeks in between classes), but I took an 8wk LOA between Research & Ethics (classes 6 & 7). If I continued in that same pattern, it dawned on me that I'd be done next June, which would mean that this would be a TWO YEAR program for me. For some reason I hadn't looked at it that way until I realized this past 4th of July that I had already been doing this for exactly one year, and I was exactly 1/2 way through. I got kinda depressed! Well, more than kinda. I decided I don't want this lifestyle for another year, I've missed out on so much since last July (family, birthdays, giving extra to my job when they really needed it, etc.). So, I'm going to try it -- I'm in Ethics now and have already signed up to go straight into Spirituality the next day. Not only that, I'm going to TRY to double up on Trends & Leadership, so my Capstone class is over the extended Christmas break. If all goes as planned and I don't fall over dead, I'll be done the end/middle of January instead of next summer. I was a huge proponent of breaks when I started, but in retrospect (for ME), I can't say I really utilized those two weeks for anything exciting (because I was still working, so it's not like it was two weeks of playtime). Frankly, those two weeks really only turn into one free weekend because that first weekend you're still finishing up your last assignment. The weekend in the middle is totally free, but then that next weekend I always found myself opening up the syllabus early and trying to get a jumpstart in the new class. I may be sorry, but I'm going to try & plow through. Many here have and are now spending their weekends at the beach and having quality family time ;), and I'm jealous! Way more info than you asked for, maybe I needed to rationalize it to myself LOL!
