Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Congrats on being almost done with CH! I wish I had the stamina and drive to go straight through from class to class. As it is I will be done in July next year if I did, but I need to take breaks in between so it will be more like Sept-Nov of next year before I am done.

Trust me. I have already been debating taking a break but idea of enjoying my entire summer next year sounds incredibly awesome. I love the warm summer weather.

How are you able to find out which instructors provide a good learning experience. The one I currently have is not really engaged but my previous two were really good.

Word of mouth, peeps PMing me with names. Ever since my first class ended I ask about instructors for all of my new classes. I knew I had a bad one then, but now that I've had much better ones I realize just how bad it was.

I have mentioned to a few my application to GCU. Many many have been supportive. However, there are nay sayers.

You are 57, what difference does it make? No one cares if you have a BSN. You just need to go out and get a social life, that will keep you busy.

I gather they feel it will be busy work with no purpose at my age. I am not hurt, but am thinking about all of the comments I

read and hear.

Have any of you run into this sort of thing?

No, nobody told me making myself smarter was a waste of time, nor did they tell me I'm too old. They can bite me anyway, because I don't give a crap what other people think.

If you are experiencing negativity, ignore it. Those that are spewing this negativity to bring you down are not people you want to surround yourself with. These are the type of people that will wait for you to stumble and pounce on you like an injured gazelle on the Serengeti.

I think they are also two things. Ignorant and jealous.

1) They call it busy work and say you need a social life. Well, guess what. Here is a NEWSFLASH PEOPLE: ADN programs are NOT the end all of education. You will be busy, however, you will be learning, more than you thought possible. The adage of "You don't know, what you don't know" fits in this situation. They have NO clue what they are missing educationally. It's an ignorant comment, IMO.

2) They are jealous. Yep..they are too afraid to take the plunge. If they have been out of school for several years like many of us have, it's scary. You are willing to take the risk and earn a degree you have said you want, and the naysayers are sitting on the sidelines wishing it was them.

My first wasn't great either and not impressed with current one. My 2nd/3rd were both really good though!

I have a friend, 54 yrs old, ADN, has worked in critical care for 25 years, spotless record. Moved to Denver last month. Can't find a job to save her life. With the influx/oversaturation of new grads these days, the hospitals are choosing them (new BSNs) over her. Unless she gets busy and gets her BSN, I imagine her social life is about all she's gonna have to keep her busy.

Does she know it's the ADN that is holding her back? There was a former ADN on the state board here on AN who was moving my way from Denver. Her main reason was just that. She couldn't find a position in Denver and most ADN's at that time (2 years ago now) to obtain that BSN in five years.

I am on my own.. I have no spouse or anyone to fall back on... I am thinking..

reality check, no choice.

Sure, you have a choice. You don't have to go to school. Nobody is mandating you, right? I too am a primary bread winner with tween children still in the house, one special needs and a husband with health issues and unable to work. I did further my education to carve a deeper niche for myself just in case the IOM came knocking at my door. However, I wanted to earn my BSN. It has always been a dream of mine.

I think the crux of this is that I wanted to know if others get negative responses.. if so we need to applaud our advancement in education.

Well, I think I got about three congrats at work from my co-workers and one from a family friend. And I didn't get a ticker tape parade that I thought I earned. :clpty::smiley_aa: :nmbrn: My strongest support and congratulations came from people HERE! Yep, one special person even sent me an amazing gift. :flwrhrts: People that have never met me showed more enthusiasm than people that live in my house, lol.

Do you remember what programs are not accredited, off the top of your head? I'm curious.

No I don't remember, I read about it from someone posting here asking about a particular school, I was curious and looked the school up and it was not accredited. Apparently there are 2 entities that provide accreditation: https://www.discovernursing.com/nurse-accreditation#.U93ANGK9KSM

Take a look at the website it was a bit of a surprise what they say.

I don't want to go to the zoo, or shopping.. I find that ridiculous as I did that my entire life with my children. I am happy to study... I think the nay sayers want to be entertained. I am not of that sort. Got it.

Well, I like the zoo, but I certainly didn't see it during my time with GCU! LOL!!! My happy time was spent coming here to vent and listen to music while typing papers. Nice...calming...music or head banging rock.:rckn:

Oh, and it's not my thread. It is OUR thread!! But I started it a very long time ago because I was looking for advice and support from others. Little did I know I would meet such awesome people. :)

I am sorry if you feel stessed

Comes with the territory. You will have days you want to pull our your last hair. You want to give up and your brain feels totally fried. You come here, whine a little, and we give you support, a violin solo :vlin: and send you back into the flames because we have all been there or still basking in the flames! LOL.

I think school is extremely stressful.. we all love to learn, but..there are those deadlines. I am also worried about signing up with a school that does group projects..

Most if not all do group projects. It's the popular thing to do. You will do FINE! Yeah, they suck, but most of them go ok. They can certainly teach you patience or leadership skills.
