Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Time zone adjusted. While I wait to hear if I am accepted and find out what classes I need, I know you all have mentioned things I should do ahead of time. I found a group-on that is an IT tutorial on Microsoft Office. Do I need to know power point? If I do, I better get at that portion first. Also, PEERLA? I have to learn that new system of writing papers. If you can think of anything else, let me know. Do I need any particular school supplies? Thanks in advance! :cat:

Nights was my faaaaavorite shift EVER. My circadian rhythm is definitely 0-dark-thirty. Even as a little kid I'd be up all night coloring or something, but come morning mom had to drag me out the bottom of my bed by my ankles (ker-plunk!). So ahhhh, night shift :heartbeat: : Few docs. NObody's stealing your chart. NO families. NO meals to deliver/clean up/count. NO case managers telling you to get your pt ready to DC. NO trips to MRI/CT (well unless it's an emergency). NO menus/dietary. NO PT/OT. NO administration, except for the House Sup. NO taking your pt for laps around the nrs station BID dragging the IV pole, Pleur-Ex, foley. PLENTY of chairs. Only the occasional turf your stable dude to Tele because ED's bringing up your new tPA'd CVA. So draw labs @ 0400 & give baths @ 0630, I'll take that trade off any day, and you get more $$$ ? Yes, had the time of my life.

Oh, and NObody's at the grocery store when you get off @ 0730!

Oh my....I would stay up reading books, knew that I had to close my book and be still when mom/dad checked on me than back to the book! LOL....CM's telling you to d/c your pt....we wouldn't do that, would we???? LOLOLOL :lol2::lol2::sarcastic::lol2::lol2:. I loved shopping at night too!

I love my case manager and social worker. They are my BFF's at work. Between the three of us (I do education) the poor staff nurses have no where to run. "Is that O2 off yet?" "Get that foley out and get them to pee, they have to be outta here by 1500", :roflmao:. "What do you mean they can't be SNF'd. They have met their 96 hour stay...they need to GO!"

Prism, you are Crazy! LOL!

I HATED nights. All the admits seem to come after 7 pm and then you have that lull that made me sleepy :zzzzz: only to have to come alive at 0400 and run around like a nut trying to get it done before day shift. I'm an early bird. I'm getting up around the time you go to bed! LOL.

Yes, you will have to know power points. There is one in the first class. Hit up Owl Purdue to see what an APA template looks like and KNOW the headings. You will need level 1 and 2, so be familiar on what they look like. Definitely know how to write a paper on Word.

PEERLA, if you are going to use it, watch the tutorial and get a feel for how it works. Just be familiar overall with the paper writing and such.

I am happy! Spoke with them today, got all forms in, incuding FASFA... Derk, I probably will be a bit behind you as you as are ready to go.. I still don't know what I need credit-wise. Thanks for the encouragement to all! :)

They are very quick to get everything in order so you can begin

When I was hired at my facility I wanted to work days but only had a 3 month rotation shift available. When I went to do my night rotation I decided I wanted to stay on noc shift. Luckily they were short staffed and let me stay! I have no plans to work days ever!

I'm such a day shift nerd. I admit it. I like the busy days with managers and such there. It helps to really like who I work with, managers included.

I'm a night and a day. In my 20s and 30s I could never sleep more than 4 hours a night. Then every 2 weeks I would sleep all day get up for 2 hours and then sleep all night. Now that I am more *mature* (gasp). I do 6-7 hours. Back in the day when there were 8 hour shifts evenings was nice, except it messed with getting to events. I really burned the midnight oil then! :angrybird9:

I can do minimal sleep. Doing school I would get maybe four hours. However, it took its toll.

I remember those days when I was twenty. Still didn't like nights, but it didn't kill me, lol.

Isn't it great that there are people who prefer one or the other, and really excel at it? I lasted a whole 2 weeks on dayshift, bailed to nights and never looked back (until I left bedside, that is). One thing I remember vividly was that last minute rushing like the proverbial chicken :chicken:, and then when you sat down to give your day nurse report, I remember thinking, "man, she looks so fresh, happy, and ready to start the day, and she smells good - I, on the other hand, look and smell like I just got hit by a bus".

And that coffee smelled sooooo good. :teapot:
