Grad programs in Melbourne

I'm due to finish my Bachelor of Nursing at the end of '09 at a Uni in Perth. I've always liked the idea of moving interstate again. My boyfriend has hinted that he might want to do his PhD or some other post grad study in Melbourne at some stage in the next year or so, depending on what his options are.

So I really need to find out what my options are before I seriously consider agreeing to such a move if it does come up. It interests me greatly but being over in Perth I feel like I have little idea about the grad programs in Melbourne for an RN. I have tried to do some internet homework and so far the Royal Melbourne seems decent, but I'm against putting all my eggs in one basket. What I'm really lacking is information on the reputation of the hospitals or the grad programs themselves so if anybody has good or bad experiences, please share them with me.

I would really like to end up in ED/ICU but not without a few months experience in something like medical/surgical so if anybody knows of a decent hospital that offers opportunities like this please let me know.

Oh and if anybody has any information on Nursing wages in Victoria that would be fantastic. I'm not in it for the money but it's handy information to have.

Hi Guys,

I did my grad program last year at st v's and thought it was great. Good support system, a well run hospital, cool staff all easy to talk to, good education in grad year. The rotations i did were what i really wanted renal/stroke/endo and e.d. if successful u usually get one of your top picks for a clinical rotation so try to do well in the interviews to get the rotations you want. St v's is easily accessible and close to brunswick st which is good for going out. I dont know what else to say but if you have any questions about grad year/st v's ect just ask, im happy to help. Mick

mickhing, thanx for the offer.. sometime in the near future, will indeed need your advice in working/applying work in melbourne..

Hi! I'm also due to finish my BSN here in the Philippines. As I was searching options for possible employment later, i came across these "graduate programs" in AU. Is this like volunteer nursing we have? Is this a job? or just a training ground/ bridging program of some sort? Should I pay to be in this grad program like we do here in the philippines? or will i be trained and earn at the same time? please please advise

Graduate programs are competitive, year-long placements designed to assist graduate nurses transition from studetns to registered nrses. Though each hospital program differs, msot provide a period of supernumeracy; a more experienced nurse (preceptor) to supervise, support and monitor; education days; rotations through different wards or departments (one, two or three over the year); assessment hurdles or requirements; and the option to stay with the hospital at the end of twelve months.

Graduates work full time, rotate through all shifts, and are paid at first year rates, including loading, sick and annual leave.

thanks talaxandra for your quick reply :yeah::yeah:... please advise me again, What should I do before submitting an on-line application to a graduate program? It says on their website that they offer sponsorships to recently graduated Registered (Div 1) Overseas Nurse. Should I apply for a visa now?:confused:

I suggest you check out the large thread in the International forum on wanting to work in Australia

I'm with silverdragon (which is a good thing, what with her being the mod and all!) - you'll find answers to most of the questions you have about visas and registrtion to work in Australia in the forum, by people far more qualified than I to comment; you just have to search a little.

For international graduates, it is hard to get into the public system because of computer matching. However, still there are chances to apply if you find any hospitals which aren't filled 100%. The ads come out in some career websites (A, B , C and D) between December and January.
