Grad programs in Melbourne

I'm due to finish my Bachelor of Nursing at the end of '09 at a Uni in Perth. I've always liked the idea of moving interstate again. My boyfriend has hinted that he might want to do his PhD or some other post grad study in Melbourne at some stage in the next year or so, depending on what his options are.

So I really need to find out what my options are before I seriously consider agreeing to such a move if it does come up. It interests me greatly but being over in Perth I feel like I have little idea about the grad programs in Melbourne for an RN. I have tried to do some internet homework and so far the Royal Melbourne seems decent, but I'm against putting all my eggs in one basket. What I'm really lacking is information on the reputation of the hospitals or the grad programs themselves so if anybody has good or bad experiences, please share them with me.

I would really like to end up in ED/ICU but not without a few months experience in something like medical/surgical so if anybody knows of a decent hospital that offers opportunities like this please let me know.

Oh and if anybody has any information on Nursing wages in Victoria that would be fantastic. I'm not in it for the money but it's handy information to have.

Hopefully a Vic grad can discuss programs with you.

As of October 31st (the second of three pay rises as part of the 2007-2011 agreement), graduate nurses earn a weekly base rate of $879 ($23.1316/hr for a 38-hour week, $21.9750/hr if you get ADOs). All public system nurses get penalty rates of time and a half on weekend, $22 per PM shift, $51.10 for nights ($58.90 for permanent nights). Keep in mind that Victoria's the only state that has ratios, which I think are worth more than a pay rise!

Hope that helps :) T

Hi everyone.

I graduated December 2008 but missed out on NGP. I live in NSW but I am keen to relocate interstate, either Victoria or Queensland. It would be nice if any Victorian or Queensland Nurses would read this thread and provide us more info on how to go about new graduate program without the computer match system.

Been looking at application on mutual recognition on these states and it seem to be a quick process. I want to know what other options are available for newby nurses in these states :redbeathe. I love nursing and would take any oppties...I am sure I will learn on the spot even if I only have my experiences from clinical placements.

Hope to hear from someone out there very soon :nuke:

Thanks talaxandra, it doesn't seem like too bad a deal at all. I do like the idea of ratios.

RNSunny, what is this computer matching system?

A few of the big Melbourne hospitals have mid year intakes, entry is without going through the computer match system you just apply to the employment officer.

I know Monash in clayton have a mid year intake and the Austin do as well, well they did a couple of years ago. Best bet get a google search going and get the employment, human resources, whatever they call it these days contact, email address and state what you want and your experience this far. My experience is that they all use online contact, whether it is email or experession of interest.

Most of these places will take you on no matter what, maybe on nurse bank, then into the midyear grad intake. The only stipulation usually is that you are a new grad and haven't worked full time since qualifying.

You will definately get work and if not in a specialised grad year, I have heard new grads talking about getting a position on a ward, having a mentor and working with the clinical educator on the ward, zac same as being in a grad program.

Good luck,

"RNSunny, what is this computer matching system?"

CMS is when all potential nurs graduands go through the state's health website by mid-year 2009 to register their options for GNP. It was a mix of public and private hosp. Your uni will definitely inform all their students about how to go through CMS. In NSW we got to choose 8 facilities.

There were options on the website that u can choose. Normally, I got to research the facilities before I have to submit it.

Hope this helps you rubystar:mad:

The Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria manages the computer matching system in Victoria. http://computermatching.pmcv.com.au/index.cfm

You will find a directory of all the hospitals involved and a link to their websites.

Good luck.

Hi Guys,

I did my grad program last year at st v's and thought it was great. Good support system, a well run hospital, cool staff all easy to talk to, good education in grad year. The rotations i did were what i really wanted renal/stroke/endo and e.d. if successful u usually get one of your top picks for a clinical rotation so try to do well in the interviews to get the rotations you want. St v's is easily accessible and close to brunswick st which is good for going out. I dont know what else to say but if you have any questions about grad year/st v's ect just ask, im happy to help. Mick
