I know! It's alot! I lucky have got my immunization records in bits and pieces just bc of work. I did have to go and get the 2nd MMR done last month. The ppd I get done yearly bc it's required for my job. The hep b series I've had from a while back (lpn school) but I might need a buster, not sure yet.

Now the flu shot are we required to get that or is it optional??

I'm not sure if the Flu shot is optional or not - it is a requirement at my job, so I will have to get it; I would think that it might be at the clinical sites, but you never know.

Has anyone ordered their uniforms yet?

I haven't ordered my uniforms yet. I'm probably going to go by the schedule they sent with the packet and order one the first of December, then wait til I get my refund for Spring semester to order another one.

We're budgeting like mad because I've been a sahm/student since deciding to go back for nursing. We're having to space out all of these costs as much as possible right now.

I'd REALLY like to know about the cons of purchasing texts that aren't the latest edition. I made it through my pre-reqs with previous editions and saved HUNDREDS. I never saw any difference in information between my older edition and the new ones. I'm hoping it might be the case with these books. Maybe if there are any differences I could copy them from a classmate. Have y'all heard anything about older editions?

Ok I found out that the flu vaccine isnt optional, we have to have it to do clinicals at the hospital. So I'll have mine done sometime this week when I take my son to get his done.

I havent even thought about buying books or uniforms yet. I dont think I'll even think about doing that until November. I'm also just buying 2 uniforms, thats it. The background check I'll do sometime within the next few weeks, again not thinking alot about that either just because we have another 3 1/2 months before we start.

HA! the only thing I broke my neck to get done was the confirmation, passport, survey and fee. I'm talking I got my acceptance letter on that Saturday and that Monday I drove (not mailed) to the nursing department to submit those items. I was so happy and worked so hard to get accepted that I was scared it would be taken away from me if I didnt hurry up and turn in my conformation stuff, LOL!!

To RockabillyMommy who said, "How are y'all tracking down all of your immunization records?"

I did not have any records of my immunizations when I originally applied at GPC so I just went to my regular doctor last year and they did blood work to figure out what shots I needed. (It's called titer, I just learned what that meant :o) Then I had to come back the following week after they received my results and got all the shots I needed. The MMR has to be done twice so I had to go back a month later to get that second one. Once I got accepted into the nursing program the immunization requirements were more than the original requirements for applying for GPC so I'm back to the doctors getting the rest done. I had chicken pox when I was 12 so the titer showed that I had antibodies so I didn't need that shot but I have to take the Hep B. I've got to go back in a month for the second shot and then 5 months later for the third one. I called the nursing dept. and asked about the third shot since we will already be in school by then. She said that we will still turn in our immunization record and sign a waiver when we start classes and then we have to bring proof of our 3rd shot when we get it. I didn't know we were required to get the flu shot but I got mine anyway just incase. Now I just have to order uniforms, sign up for CPR class etc.

To everyone else that is starting the nursing program... As far as the books we need to order, I've already ordered, "Test Success - Test Taking Technigques for Beginning Nursing Students" by Patricia M. Nugent and Barbara A. Vitale. (that is highly recommended)

Are we required to have these books before classes start? "1-3 required" and "4-10 suggested"?

Ok... I believe I answered my own questions on whether or not we are required to have the books before classes start. The answer is 'Yes'. Can anyone tell me where we would purchase these books? I tried looking at the book store online but I didn't see anything for the nursing program. Maybe I need to get it straight from the book store? Can they be purchased anywhere as long as the ISBN# is correct?

I'm gonna try amazon and chegg when I buy my books.

I found them all between Amazon, half.com, chegg and a few other discount sites. I'm, tentatively, planning to buy the previous edition of most of the more expensive books. I've already downloaded Davis' Drug Guide For Nurses onto my phone lol. I've heard that during clinicals you'll be glad to have a select few books handy rather than lugging around several hard copies.

Will they let us pull up our drug book app on our phone during clinicals?, if so I'm gonna download that app on my iphone too!:-)

I hope so! I know that a previous class got ipod touches and ipads through a technology grant program partly for the purpose of having books loaded onto their devices.

It was one of the first pieces of advice I got, get the basic books on your phone for clinicals.

Did you guys see on the GPC website that they are only offering the generic RN track once a year now (fall only)?

I'm happy for those of you all that got in for the spring, so you want have to deal with double the competetion of trying in get in for the fall.

I wonder why did they change that?

Whoa, crazy. I'm terribly curious as to why they're doing away with the spring class. I wonder if they're raising the number of seats for the Fall class now.

A friend of mine heard from a current nursing student that GPC is working on offering a BSN. If that's the case, maybe they're changing things up a little to get ready?
