GPC Spring 2016 Graduates

Here is a place that we could start discussing the next part of our journey in nursing school.

Has anyone read the book they suggested in our acceptance letters? I bought it off amazon and I am excited to read it!!!

Hi milesamelia. I was going to take a CNA class in between semesters, but I decided to finish it at my current school, Southern Crescent Tech. (formerly known as Griffin Tech.). I'm able to use the last portion of my Hope here, so it would be better to do this instead of spending unnecessary money out. Also, it will allow me to receive my Health Care Science Certificate since I have all other courses needed for the certificate. My class is M-Th 9 am -1:15 pm, June 2 - July 31. It's also offered: M-Th, June 2 - July 31: (2) 4 - 8:15 pm in Griffin, (3) 8 am - 12:15 PM at the Flint location, and (4) 8 am - 12:15 PM at the Henry County location. The CNA test is taken, I think, 1 week after the class ends (I will let you know if that's incorrect on the testing.). Before I dropped the course this Spring semester, Ms. Mack (the professor I had), let us know about how all of her students passed the CNA test from her class last semester and about all students who passed the CNA test from another campus. I really like her a lot. Ms. Mack is very thorough in the class and let us know exactly how we will be tested on the CNA test as she went over certain sections of the class ie. blood pressure, recording of urine collection, etc. I was only in her class for about 3 weeks before dropping. Our school is on a semester system, so it was about a 16 week course during this Spring, but the class was only 2 days a week. During the summer, the class is only 2 months, but it will be a 4 day a week course. pbjclan also shared some good information about the CNA course offering at the Giving Care Education Center in Woodstock as well. It sounds like you get a little longer to study when you finish that course.

Also, thanks milesamelia for the information on the shoes and the handbook information. :)

Thanks kjewel36 and FutureGaRN15 on the information provided. :)

Thanks lienbert! I'm actually thinking about Cobb CNA school because of 1) location and 2) it seems very well organized. Some of the places I've looked at seem pretty sketchy! Has anyone been there or know anything about it? They have a course at the school where I took my prereqs but I couldn't make it work with my work schedule. Cobb CNA seems like a good bet though.

Does anyone know when fall registration is? It seems like it is already going on for most schools.

If you had to estimate, how much money did it cost to prepare for the nursing program? With the cost of uniforms, shoes, CPR class, shots, background check, and etc being taken into consideration.. We haven't got our follow up email yet and I was just wondering.. All of that stuff seems pretty expensive. Also, did you guys get the books from GPC bookstore?

bridge36,

They do sell some of the books you will need in the bookstore, I know the Fundamentals book is sold in there, but unless you receive financial aid and want to use it to purchase your books, I would suggest searching online because I got mine a LOT cheaper than buying in the bookstore. Also, they are going to tell you that they recommend buying 2 uniforms (and I think they were around $70ish each) but take it from someone on a budget, it is very doable to get by on one uniform. Also, once you start the program, there is a way to buy used uniforms that graduates donate for people in financial need...so that is something to inquire about once you get started (I wish I had known about that before buying mine). Shoes - I got some awesome shoes from allheart.com - they are by Scrubzone. They are very comfortable, have good reviews, ultra slip resistant, wipe squeaky clean (mine still look brand new after 4 semesters) and only $24!! Background check/drug test will be done through Advantage Students and I think that was around $75. Try your local health department for your shots. Once you are a student at GPC you can get some of the shots/tests at the school clinic. The nursing program & Kaiser will offer you health insurance through Kaiser (at least they did for us - not sure now since the new health care reform) but it is cheap and great coverage. The shots are considered preventive care and you get them free once you are part of the Kaiser network. Please let me know if I left anything out or if you want any other information :-)

Thanks for the info! Where did you go for your CPR certification and how much did that cost?

Just an FYI. The uniforms are not based on $ need just first come. And usually at orientation. Just limited sizes.

Bridge36,

I did a CNA class over the summer to try to help me since I had no prior medical knowledge and got my CPR through them. Go to www.heart.org and you can search for classes near you (they usually offer them at a hospital). Just make sure you are searching for BLS for Healthcare Providers. Also, the school does not accept CPR from Red Cross, it has to be through American Heart Association.

Here is the exact link to find a course: (there are other places/ways to find a course, but maybe this will help you get started)

Is it just me or has anyone else been obsessively checking their email daily for the information they will be sending out? They just said they would be emailing everyone some time in May, correct?

Yes!!! I am doing the same thing.

I just checked mine AGAIN!!! Still nothing:( I wish they would at least post the classes for fall so we know our class schedule...I have to figure out child care! I'm assuming it will be the same as last year but I'll feel better when I know for sure!

Well. They are wrapping up the semesters are the current students and graduation. Enjoy this pre nursing school life.
