GPC Fall 08?

Published

I applied for the Fall 2008 General Track at GPC, and I was wondering if anyone has gotten their letters yet? My classmates and I went to talk to someone at advisement and they said they will be mailed out by the end of this month. I'm so anxious!

That's just it ABMSAM, I don't know exactly what the class start was for each campus, and if it's true that 50% drop out, who am I to say their reason for dropping. Some might've decided it wasn't for them, some might've had other personal issues going on outside of school and yes, some might have failed all together. But who am I to discourage others from their dream. Yes, GPC can do a lot of things to improve, but heck, so can a lot of other institutions.

Those of you that are going to GPC in the Fall and going forward, think POSITIVE. I also read the threads prior to starting and I was terrified. I'm not sure of your situation, but for me I almost didn't have any other choice. Well, I could've waited and applied other places, but I just didn't think that I could turn down an acceptance that I already had:nono:. I know of others who are single moms (financial and convenience) and some that don't have transportation (convenience and MARTA) that's made GPC their choice for those reasons. Thinking negative and continuously hearing the negative isn't going to help you. I said it once and I will continue, yes there are things that can be changed, but my experience haven't been nearly as terrible as I've heard/read, which tells me that other's experience doesn't have to be mine or yours. Others have and are doing it and so can you. Some days you may feel like crying and some will give you the confirmation as to why you chose nursing from the start. Stay true to yourself and give it all you got. You really can do it.

I would like to also say that those who have negative responses to GPC are entitled to their opinions as are those of us who feel GPC is making changes to better the program.

I must say that from my experience with GPC, I feel they truly are making a step towards the better. I have been with GPC since Fall 2006 and must say that one of the best things I ever did was spoke with students from other schools, both Associate and Bachelor degree program seekers, and found that all of them have issues. It is not just GPC. Yes, GPC does have issues they could make better, but it takes time and believe me the changes are occurring. For those who believe only 50% pass then you must do your research also. Most schools have this close of a pass rate when it is all said and done.

Speak to anyone and you will find them saying time and time again that NURSING SCHOOL in general is not easy. You must have a passion for it and a commitment to becoming a nurse. It is so very important to remember this and be strong and don't let the negativity hold you down, let it empower you, and stay positive.

Good luck to all of you and if you have any questions you can PM me anytime.

I am excited to hear the positive!!! It is difficult when you only hear the negative, and then begin to worry about the choices you are making. Last fall, I went in to the academic advising office and spoke with J T about GPC's nursing program. I had heard from other students about the 50% drop out rate, so I wanted to discuss that with Ms. T. Ms. T did not volunteer that statistic to me, but when I asked her specifically about it, she did confirm that my information was correct. When I asked her why the drop out rate was so high (and this is drop out rate, not fail out rate) she said she wasn't completely sure, but understood it was for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason she gave was that students felt the staff was not supportive of them, and even indifferent, and also that many people could not handle the rigorous 8-5/ 5 day a week schedule that the program requires. For whatever reason, I am happy to hear that improvements are being made, and that students feel better about GPC! I have loved GPC up to this point, and hope that my nursing school experience does not change that opinion.

Just do your research. That's my only advice. Talk to AS MANY current students as you can - students in different programs around the area. Find out the attrition rates of other schools. I can guarantee that they are nowhere close to 50%. I agree that 50% is not the FAIL rate. It is the attrition rate - the rate at which a program loses students for one reason or another. I withdrew. I did not fail However, had I not withdrawn, I would have been risking failing a TWELVE hour course. That does not look very nice on a transcript, and it would have been very difficult for me to get into another school had I flunked that semester. My point is this: keep in mind that while students withdraw for many reasons, they most often withdraw to save an otherwise excellent GPA. Remember, GPC is very choosy about who they accept into the nursing program. These are not idiots withdrawing because they are poor students.

In the end, it's a very personal decision. You weigh your options and determine the risks versus the benefits. As for me, I made the wrong decision, and paid for it dearly. Though, now I see that it was a blessing in disguise.

Good luck to you all. Those of you who graduate form GPC's nursing program have my most humble respect. I'm graduating from UGA this year Summa Cum Laude, and I couldn't hack it. I LOVED GPC for my pre-reqs, but boy, the nursing program was a different story. Again, best of luck.

PS: Current students: is RR still teaching at the Lawrenceville campus? I just loved her.

Hi everyone,

I'm somewhat new to this forum, so forgive me....I posted this in another thread, but this thread seems much more recent.

I start my 1st semester of nursing courses in the Fall 2008 at Clarkston. I have not yet taken BIO 1913 (Micro), and am unable to do so this summer. Do other people have pre-reqs not yet completed? I know you're allowed to take pre-reqs during the nursing curriculum, but is it really possible? I have until my 3rd semester to take Micro. For those of you who've completed your 1st year of nursing at GPC, should I take it during my 1st semester or my 2nd?

For those of you wondering what GPA's, etc GPC accepted, I have a 3.65 cumulative GPA, and an 83 comprehensive NET score (70 verbal, 93 math), and my science GPA was 4.0.

Thanks so much for your help! Look forward to meeting some of you soon!

I have completed all of my pre reqs except for humanities, which I am going to do as an online class in the fall. I also start in the fall though it will be at the lawrenceville campus. I have taken most of my classes online and have been very successful.

Microbiology i took the class online and I went to lab and made an A in both. Did you think of taking it next summer when you do not have any classes? That could always be an option. I know the semester would be shorterbut I think you could do it.

Can you take Microbiology without being accepted into the nursing program?

Which humanity are you going to take? there are just soo many options I always wonder what others have chosen and why.

Yes, they generally want you to take Micro before being accpeted.

I just finished the program and I had 2 friends that took Micro online and the lab in L'ville the summer between their 1st and 2nd year (between 2nd and 3rd semester). I wouldn't advise taking classes WITH the nursing classes.

HTH!

I am not sure which humanities I will take, which ever one I can get online. Actually I already signed up for one but I am not even sure which one it is, I will have to go back and look. Online classes have been very easy for me so hopefully that will be as well. I need to set up to get my CPR class in, this past month for me has been crazy and I have not had much time for anything extra.

I'm taking my pre-reqs at GPC now. Can someone tell me which instructors are good and which ones to avoid for A&P1, 2 and Micro? I prefer to take classes at Lawrenceville which is closest to my house but i'll travel further out if it will help me to get a better grade. Is it really possible to take those science classes online? somehow i feel like i may end up reading the textbook and not having a clue about what's going on. I'm not too crazy about online classes.

If you don't want to put any instructor on blast on this website, send me a private message. I'm registered for Fall A&P1 on Tues/Thurs evenings at Lawrenceville but they still haven't posted the teacher's name so it's like Russian Roulette at the moment.
