4.0 gpa a myth?

For those who are applying, I just wanted to say that I think the 4.0 gpa requirement is a myth. I think some counselors say that to get students to work harder. Other students may say that to discourage their competition. I understand that nursing school admissions is competitive so the higher the better. There are people who get into a nursing program without a perfect gpa. :twocents:

LOL.. unfortionately very true

What??? That is the stupidest comment ever. I think their might be ONE of those in my school.

OMG...y'all...I think it was just a joke.

no, I certainly do not think it's a myth. It is certainly possible to make straight A's on a handful of classes. And with schools like TWU who add .40 credits to those who complete 16 or more hours at their school does not make it any easier. I would have well over a 4.0 if I had this advantage.

Pretty much anyone with average intelligence can make a 4.0 if they do the work it requires. But like the OP was saying, I don't buy that you have to have a 4.0 to get into nursing school. I would bet that even TWU accepted a few people with less than a 4.0.

When I first applied to nursing school to start in Spring 07, I was denied at El Centro with a 4.0 on the prereqs. That means over 100 people also had a 4.0 and were accepted ahead of me. At the time, I only had 9 hours of support courses, which they used as the first tie breaker. Luckily, someone turned down their spot and I did get in.

I took my pre-reqs at TCC and had a friend denied with a 4.0 and just missing Micro.

It looks like the numbers have come down a bit in the last few semesters, especially since DCCCD changed their requirements. However, it was definitely true for my class!

ditto with the other posters! :yeah:

i got admitted with a 3.0ish gpa. then i later learned that the majority of students were on the same boat as i was during the admission period.

4.0 Nothing but mere piece of s.... , trust me, i m an above av student, in no class was i able to get A, even though, my overall points were abt to near A; I had got all As, had my teacher given me the slight curve.

I think it also comes down to how you can test. A's are not that hard though if you know how to study for a test. I just took 24 hours in the Fall and made straight A's. I was advised not to do so, but you just have to manage time.

24 credit hours...is that what you mean.......was it for nursing..do you to houston community..

I know a 4.0 student with all prereqs completed who did not get in TCC a few semesters back, as all 100 applicants who turned in their applications before her were accepted first. If you have over 100 4.0 students, then they go by submission date. I got in with a 3.91 but know folks that semester who did not get in with a 3.6. This semester, someone got in with a 3.5, so it all just depends on the pool of applicants who apply when you do. The girl with the 3.5 by the way did so on her 4th attempt, so by not giving up, she finally got in.

Its all relative and depends on the school!! If the school is very competitive and based on GPA not points like EC/NL or even TCC then 4.0 is not a myth. People have been denied acceptence to these schools because every applicant who was accepted had a 4.0!! Just depends on how many people apply and how well they do!!

Don't forget that GPA is not the only thing some schools look at. Someone with no medical experience with an average essay probably DOES need a 4.0 or close to it to be competitive. Whereas someone with a great essay and a resume with paid or volunteer experience in a hospital can get by easier with, say a 3.3. They also look at what the lower grades are in. If you have a 3.3 but A's in all your sciences, it looks better than a 3.6 with A's in electives and B-C's in the sciences. There is no one answer. Do your best work and see what happens.
