Going on to second semester with smaller class

Published

My first semester of nursing school is over, and our class has become very close this semester. We're all friends and we all get along so well. It makes me sad that, as I move on to my second semester, many of my class mates won't be going with me.

We had several people who dropped during the course of the semester. I don't know the exact number but it was at least 3, if not more.

Now that finals are over, I have learned that at least 5 people in my class did not make the 80% to move on in the program.

It kinda gets me down. :sniff:

I truely know what you mean. My class started with 115 students and we are now down to 90 and going into the final semester. However some of the 90 are not from our original class, they are returning students...In medsurg 1 and 2 we had lost somewhere around 20 students and we had 11 returning that had failed out the prior year....Then in medsurg 3 and 4 I think we had about 10 more that joined us that failed the prior year as well....In our program you have 1 chance if you fall below passing, but you have to return the following year to redo the course work.....Its been rough, and since our final grades have not been posted because our final is Monday, I can only hope we don't lose anymore......

It is sad. I remember we had a lot of people who either dropped the 1st semester or was kicked out of the program for various reasons. The 1st semester is always the weeding out process. Medsurg is the hardest. Good luck to you and your classmates. As of today 12/12 its graduation day for me.

We started with 110 and now we are down to less than 70 students from the original group. Who knows how many will drop out after finals this upcoming week. We start our last semester in January.

Sadly be prepared for the same thing as you move into your 3rd semester. It is sad but remember not to lose your focus.

I feel the same as you. We started with 104 students, lost 2 during the semester due to non grade reasons. We just had our 3rd test on Thursday and I found out that at least 2 needed to pass and they didnt. We have our final next Thursday, I'm not sure if anyone has their grade riding on it or not. Our class gets a long really well. Not everyone knows everyone since we are split up a lot but as times goes on your meet more and more of your class and it's sad to see some of these people go :-( The class ahead of ours lost 20 students between 1st and 2nd semester...

Good luck to all of you!!! Congrats to PEBBLES1 on graduating!!

We were warned that half the class did not make it past the first quarter last year, but our class only lost one the first quarter, and will probably lose one (or none) this second quarter. I don't know if they are hoping people will get the hang of it as we go on or what, but there are many people hanging by a thread at all times. I really hate this phase of class too where people start freaking out over their grades and crying and stressing and just losing it b/c they realized they might not make it to the next semester. Its just SO awkward. I feel bad for them, and I'm doing well but I find myself having to kind of "hide" how well I'm doing (I'm not getting As but I have never been in jeopardy of failing) and simultaneously I don't understand how people can be freaking out now and they were not freaking out when they failed their first test (or their second or their third)

Some of the people who are hanging on by a thread are really causing discontent in the class too. When there's drama, they're always a part of it, or spreading it, or starting it, or the subject of it. I don't know why that is, but I cant help but wonder if we'd get along better with a few less trouble makers. terrible huh? :( I even feel guilty for thinking it.

I think it is amazing that you are all friends. The competition at my school is so much so that we see each other as the competition and for the most part do not help each other and defintely are not close friends.

We started with 100 and they told us to expect 40 to graduate. I doubt even that many will graduate.

We had a meeting where all the semester level students were there together and they had us stand up by semester. The first semester had 100 people stand up, there were about 60 of us stand up for second semester, about 40 for third and I counted 27 for forth semester.

Thats a shame and I don't understand it. For Pete's sake once they are in the progam there isn't any more competition to it! Having fellow students willing to be supportive is huge, imo. Even during our pre-reqs things weren't that tense, of course I figured my grades made me pretty much a sure thing, lol.

I ditto that. Everyone in my school is practically like family! In fact, I see my classmates more than my family these days... It doesn't make sense to hate each other when you could help one another along.

We started out this fall with 100, next quarter we will have 84. There are 5 of us who are close, and have relatively the same study styles. They all made it. It's sad to see people go but I knew it was going to be this way. Good luck!!!

You probably won't believe this. Last semester, the second semester of an ADN program we had 86 students that started the semester. 26 students went on to start third semester! 10 of us had to repeat second semester for various reasons, I had to have surgery on my neck. Most of the others just didn't make the 76% we needed to pass. This nursing program prides itself in the fact that it has a 96% NCLEX first-time pass rate. No wonder there is a nursing shortage.
