Going on to second semester with smaller class

Published

My first semester of nursing school is over, and our class has become very close this semester. We're all friends and we all get along so well. It makes me sad that, as I move on to my second semester, many of my class mates won't be going with me.

We had several people who dropped during the course of the semester. I don't know the exact number but it was at least 3, if not more.

Now that finals are over, I have learned that at least 5 people in my class did not make the 80% to move on in the program.

It kinda gets me down. :sniff:

We had 50 students accepted into our nursing program 1st semester and only 18 of those made it to the 2nd semester. We are entering the 3rd semester in January and so far it looks like only 12 will make it from our original class. We have picked up a few failures from classes ahead of us, but our original class has diminished tremendously.

Same with my class. We have lost so many this first semester, that I have lost count. It is really sad. *sigh* let me log off and go study. My final is Monday.

Specializes in MICU, SICU, CRRT,.

My class started with around 90. Some of us went on the regular track, and some on the delayed track (which spreads it out to 7 semesters instead of the traditional 5). This is last semester..graduation is in 5 days, and there are 13 graduating. Of those 13, only 5 of us are "originals"..the others are reenters after they failed a class. I like having a small group..the ones graduating are truly the "cream of the crop" so to say and will make great nurses. I am sad for those that did not make it, but can truly say they did it to themselves. We busted our tails to get where we are, and they did not. The cheated themselves up until it caught up with them, and they took the classes for granted and used it as social hour instead of learning time. You get what you put in (although i know some really wanted it, just couldnt cut it). I dont want to sound harsh, but in my school, there are so many opportunities for help and tutoring, that if you dont take them, you are behind, and will not make it. I belive people are weeded out for a reason. If you cant do a simple assesment, or know the difference between an IM or SQ injection, you will never cut it in med surg and critical care, and you may as well get out before you spend anymore money.

I wish we were friends. Most of the students in my class hate eachother, and those that don't show it generally talk behind the backs of their classmates. There's so much petty bs that its really disgusting.

Its not a competition thing, but it definitely feels like exactly what I was afraid of.... what can happen in a room full of women (not all, but really this class is just disgusting... I find myself hoping people will fail just in hopes of it making the situation less hostile)
