Hello everyone,
Looking for licensed nurses in a similar situation. My parents decided, for whatever reason, to bring me up using my middle name instead of my first. I can't think of any time in 30+ years that I've gone by my first name; my middle name is my identity. I've become used to being addressed by first name on first meeting with people who've only known me via paperwork and official documents, and having to deal with getting them to call me something different.
I've been told by someone in another field that this might be a problem when it comes to life after licensure, and I might want to consider getting the order of my names legally changed.
I've got over a year before a license will be in sight, so I figured I'd start asking early. Do any of you go by your middle name instead of your first, professionally? And if you do, has it ever become an issue? Is it important enough that I really would want to consider a legal name change, or is it no big deal? Thanks for input.
No, it is not a problem after licensure because my full legal name appears on my nursing license.
I also, go by my middle name and I kindly correct people that use my first name and I have never had a major issue with it.
Why would you need a legal name change? Your first and your middle names ARE you legal names and it is your choice which one you go by.
I am known by my nickname. I sign all my nursing papers with my initial of my first name, then my last name, then RN. As long as you make a decision on how to sign your name on work related papers such as charts, and never change it you won't have a problem
Lets face it most doctors and nurses you can't even read their handwriting so it doesn't matter how they sign it.
You could do what my son does. K.J.Smith, RN and goes by his middle name Jim. No one knows what his first name is.
I've come across quite a bit of nurses going by a different name than what is on their employee records. And not a simple nickname like Sue instead of Susan - I've come across Shelia's that go by Fran and Adrienne who's real first name is Stephanie. Just tell people what to call you. Ask if your badge can have your preferred name on it. If they won't then ask is they will do the F. Middle Last setup.
Many married woman keep their maiden last name.. just because they are married it does not legally change! They may go socially by Mrs. husband but their legal name remains the same and that is what they sign on legal documents..Many professional woman choose to do this. ID's would match..ID badge is usually what you want to be called by staff and patients...not necessarily your real legal name.

my dad was named for his grandpa. great grandpa was "charlie" and my dad used "chuck." all went well until my dad was admitted to the bar in the same county as his grandfather, who still practiced law full time in his nineties. two identical names. charles e. ____. it became a bookkeeping, filing nightmare at the courthouse. it lasted after great grandpa's death. one died in the 1950's and the other in the 1970's, and the identical names and remarkably similar lefthanded signatures are still causing problems from time to time!
yes! use your middle name!
