I have decided to change my career and have chosen to do the LPN course throught Distant Learning. I have just applied and am awaiting to see if I am accepted into the program. I will do all the courses using the internet and home study with my final practicum and workshops in the city.
I am pretty excited about this new venture and wanted to know if anyone else out there started at my age.
In other words, do you think I am crazy?
Thanking you in advance for all suggestions and comments

:) My mom started LPN classes at age 50 and did just fine. Sounds like you have made a wise decision. Best of luck

When I graduated from LPN school I was 26 (in 1997). I was one of the youngest in my class. I graduated with people deciding to be nurses for whatever reason: I got laid off, my husband left me, etc.....
I'm 34 now working on my BSN. (LPN was the best decision I ever made, besides going on for my RN)

Hi There,
I originally took my RN years ago, graduating in 1976. There were grandmothers over 50 in my class; and they were wonderful students and did well.
After working off and on between children, etc. I then had a 16 year hiatus from nursing. I just recently completed the refresher course and am now moving on to my BN through Athabasca.
You can do it! While doing my clinical for the refresher in a long term care facility; I worked with a newly graduated over 50 LPN who was learning to do the daytime meds for 60 residents. It was tough the first couple of days but by the third day she was doing great.
Let's cheer each other on!
Good luck.

I am in a similar boat as you...I am almost 40 and have finally decided what I want to do when I grow up..lol. I worked in and managed restaurants and bars for the last 20 yrs...and when the last place closed unexpectedly in October...I was "forced" to take a job as dietary supervisor in a seniors residence. I honestly didn't think I would stay because the money wasn't there..and I really didn't consider it to be my "field". 9 months later I am still at the residence...loving every minute of it. I love these people dearly..and decided a few months ago to go back to school to become a nurse. I want to stay in geriatrics. I will be going through Norquest as well as I was unable to get funding for Bow Valley College, so I can keep my job and study at my own pace. Might take me a bit longer than going straight to school...but thats ok with me. There was a reason I was put in the position I am in...and I can't wait to finish classes and be a nurse full time...no matter what my age when I am done!! Go for it...nurses of any age are needed....as long as they are caring and devoted....

if you have the grey matter between ears you will do fine...older students are more focused that teeners....it is not easy to get into the habit of studying again and it takes discipline to do online but it is doable and you will be proud of yourself when you finish.....good luck
I am curious to know if you have been accepted yet by Norquest? I am still awaiting a reply. If you wish, we could become email study partners.
