Hello, everyone!
I am a prospective student for the GMU ABSN program for 2017. I am working on completing my A&P I and II before applying in January. I have already have a BA in Psychology from GMU. My overall GPA was not great due to an undiagnosed chronic illness that left me with many incompletes that I couldn't get done. But my last 50 or so credits were all As and I was on the Dean's List every semester. I don't know if it will help me at all to be an alumna or not. I am an older student (35 yrs old) and I have three little girls. My older two are already in elementary school and my youngest will eligible for Pre-K by the time the program starts if I'm accepted. I'm a little intimidated by the 1 year, intensive program. Anyone else thinking about applying for the same program? Any advice from those who have already started or completed it? Thanks!
Hi vcu2017,
I did not apply anywhere else. I'm an older student, local in Fairfax with 3 kids, actually just down the road from GMU so it was the program that made the most sense for me. (Plan B is not as attractive.) As for GMU, the pluses that I saw: cost--lowest by a good bit; proximity; length of program (just under 12 months); prerequisites doable (I took 14 hours last semester and 10 hours this semester and didn't have to take chemistry which was a plus, considering I had no A&P and no micro); and they have a very high NCLEX pass rate (the ABSN program as opposed to the regular BSN, that is). I'm sure it will be a very motivated and hard-working cohort. There are good reasons for selecting VCU but it wasn't an option for me. I know people who applied to GW but it's longer and more expensive and even if you get one of their scholarships you will owe more money and take longer to get get your degree s(so that's an opportunity cost), plus you would have to work at MedStar 3 years as part of the scholarship agreement (which might be fine but I like to have options and three years felt long to me.).
I'm really hoping we hear from GMU the last week of March or earlier (like the last couple of co-horts did). I got into Georgetown last week and my excitement for that has overshadowed GMU. I live in Arlington right across from GT so my commute would be 7 minutes. It's much much more expensive though and it's a 2 year masters. I like the 12 month and done program with GMU. I'm also a little worried about driving to two campuses.....that new building won't be ready in time for us to use I don't think.
Hi, LawyerRN2b,
In the cost of the program you have to consider the earning differential of having a master's as well as the lost year of income from waiting another year before you can work in the field. Only you know whether it is worth driving to a further campus for a year. Having experienced the phenomenal cost of law school and the years-long consequences that can have, though, I am sure you realize that you really do pay quite a bit more for a more expensive education that may or may not be worthwhile.
Hi Everyone!!!
Does anyone know when we will hear back? I know a lot of the other forums/previous cohorts heard end of March, and when I went to the information session in November, they had said end of March, but online now it says by end of April? Does anyone know anything different? :) (just a bit anxious lol)

I believe last years cohort heard back by late March, their website says BY late April. I'd guess we will hear anytime in between those. I had momentary excitement then frustration last week. I got an email from the admissions office but it was just wishing me a happy birthday haha. Don't want any of that while I'm anxiously awaiting news on admittance. All we can do is wait.
Hi, Quota! the same thing happened to me today--office of admissions .... just writing to wish me a happy birthday (PSYCH!!!)
Last year's cohort got emails on March 23; the year before was March 30, even though they were told late April. I think it's reasonable to expect something by the end of March.
Anxious here too! I think we'll hear something this week, honestly. Most other cohorts did. I will say, though, I have not been impressed with the staff doing the main college admissions. They wanted VA state documentation and I received the most bizarre email from them with lots of spelling errors, no punctuation, and wrong information. It put me off totally. But we'll see....I know the nursing program is awesome....so I can't be too judgmental.
Ahh!!! I would be so nervous opening an email from them to only see Happy Birthday on it! haha Happy belated birthday to all of you :)
I'm from Maryland, so I have not gotten many emails from them except a reminder email to send in my transfer student deposit! I'm finishing up my classes this semester and I thought these next two weeks would go by because of exams but nope- still anxiously waiting! I'm really nervous because reading the older posts and other forums people with high GPAs did not get in. (mine wasn't the BEST but my master's GPA was very good!) Sigh! fingers crossed and good luck!!! :)

I hope so! Then I can stop reviewing my general chemistry to take the CLEP exam for a Marymount application haha.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this thread, but I've been following it. I was wondering if anyone applied anywhere else? I applied to VCU as well and wanted to weigh out my options. I don't know too much about GMU's program. Thanks!
