GMU ABSN program 2017 applicants

U.S.A. Virginia

Hello, everyone!

I am a prospective student for the GMU ABSN program for 2017. I am working on completing my A&P I and II before applying in January. I have already have a BA in Psychology from GMU. My overall GPA was not great due to an undiagnosed chronic illness that left me with many incompletes that I couldn't get done. But my last 50 or so credits were all As and I was on the Dean's List every semester. I don't know if it will help me at all to be an alumna or not. I am an older student (35 yrs old) and I have three little girls. My older two are already in elementary school and my youngest will eligible for Pre-K by the time the program starts if I'm accepted. I'm a little intimidated by the 1 year, intensive program. Anyone else thinking about applying for the same program? Any advice from those who have already started or completed it? Thanks!

Just got my transfer acceptance today, so hoping for the best! Wish we didn't have to wait another month before we hear about admissions to the SON.

When did you apply for transfer? I just submitted my application on 2/1/17.

And i totally agree! I feel like they're one of the latest schools to let you know! They told me Kate April but I'm hoping it's closer than that like last years cohort.

This is is also the only school where I had to apply to the college and the bsn program which I thought was a little odd.

How was it that you didn't get your transfer application in until 2/1? I had to submit mine in order to get the magic G#, without which I could not submit any of the materials...

I've been taking clAsses at GMU as a non degree seeking student since summer 16 so I already have a g#

Hi TaxRN,

Thanks for taking the time to encourage us during this nerve-wracking waiting period. What is your day to day schedule like in the program? Full class days? full clinics? what will this summer look like for you--any time off at all? I'm really interested in the nuts and bolts day to day

Fall semester is 3 days didactic and lab, 1 full clinical day 12 hours, and we had Friday off. There is a 2-week winter break class that is online 1/2- 1/14. Spring semester is 3 days didactic, 1 full clinical day, and we had Tuesday or Thursday off. You will not be on campus mostly after May. You have the option to attend the graduation events in May. Summer will be first 5 weeks online research class and community health clinical and then 1 week of intensive lab, and finish with 5 weeks of individual preceptorship. So everyone will have different preceptorship schedule of Three 12 hour shifts based on the nurse you follow. We have 3 days of in person NCLEX review and then we finish first week of August. It may sound overwhelming but when you have a good supportive group of friends in the class, it really is not bad. When you get your acceptance, make a facebook group to meet others and if you need books, supplies or scrubs, make sure you find a former class cohort to buy at discount instead of spending $1k+ per semester. Good luck!

Thanks so much, that is really helpful! Re the class days in the fall, is it all day in class? a couple hours at a time?

The fall semester classes were 2.75 hours each except for 12 hour clinical at the hospital. Mondays we had med surg patho and health assessment. Tuesday or Thursday was one clinical day and the other day, we had 2 labs. Wednesday we had fundamental and nursing roles. Friday was off.

I would not focus too much on the class time as it is minor compared to the hours you will spend studying. It is an accelerated program and second degree so students are expected to have read the chapters before you come to the class and ready to discuss and do case studies. In the boot camp, the advisors recommended allocating 2-3 hour study time per week for each credit hour. So Fall semester was 17 units and I probably studied about 25- 50 hours per week outside of the classroom. Majority of the study time was spent on Med Surg Patho. It is probably the hardest class so far.

If you want to get a head start, get the davis med surg success book as it really helps with tests. Good luck on hearing the good news.

Thank you!!! Your advice and insight has been phenomenal!

Glad to help. It is subject to change depending on the administration. I think nursing school also prepares you for real life as you have to be flexible and adaptable. Good luck!

Got my transfer acceptance update today. Really hoping we hear back about the nursing program acceptances in early April, late April feels so far away.

I also got my transfer acceptance that day, but do you think this could be a sign of acceptance into the program? Because I thought admission decisions were made until April, I called and that's what I was told.

It's separate. You have to be accepted as a transfer student to be accepted into the nursing program but being accepted as a transfer does not mean you will be accepted into the nursing program.
