giving report to a monster!!!

Published

Greetings to all,

i need advice on how to handle a coworker.

I am a new grad, and each time i give report to this special individual, the person begins to drill me, before i even really get into report...and the way that he does it is like i pissed him off or something...

this is the dialogue:

ME: 46 year old man who came in---

HIIM: Why is he here?

ME: he came in for__

HIM: What day did he come?

ME: he came in on nov 28

HIM (becoming impatient :(

What is his diagnosis, (and then he makes a big sigh and starks writing fiercely, like he is about to rip his paper with his his pen)

so the whole report goes like that and sometimes i will give him the information, and maybe he isn't listening because he is too busy trying to be mr, i dont know what, a few times, i have told him,, "look, if you will just allow me to finish, i will get there'... and he will allow me to talk for awhile but then it will start up again...

i have notice that he doesn't do this to anybody else only me. and i haven't taken it personal, because its not like he is the greatest or the most respectable nurses on the unit, if you know what i mean.... i know for a fact that in 6 months i will be better than him as a nurse....

i hate giving him a report, what should i do now...because i know once i have enough, there is no mercy on him..you ever heard the saying, about being careful with the quiet ones?

looking forward to your replies:rolleyes:

I'd love to listen to him give report!

Like Deb said you have to be assertive and firm.

I can not stand people who want to do the question and answer type of report. First, politely and kindly ask them to shut the hell up until you are finished and they can ank their questions later.

Right on Tweety! Can I come work for you? I like your style! :)

I like you're style also Cheerful. But while I have my fans, I have those who don't like my style at work. Oh well. They'll get over it! ;)

Man, I have seen a lot of this as well. Why do some nurses want to eat their young?

I had the same problem. I am a new nurse since May and one of the nurses always started questioning me. She either questioned me on something I already said, as if she ignored the first time. Or she would question me on things before I got up to them. Not for nothing, but I believe breath sounds come before where the IV is located. So oneday during report I just told her to wait, I will get to it. I told her if she has any questions to wait until I was done with giving report on that pt. and then I would answer them, if I haven't already. She has finally learned to get off my back. See it's not just you. There are some bossy, control freak people out there. You will do fine. Just don't let him intimidate you. He wants to see you crack and wants to say your a bad nurse. The one's who know for sure how good you are are you and your patients and the person that precepted you. Good Luck!! It should turn out fine.:)

I have a similar problem where I work. We do "written" report so during our shift we write down all the pertinent info needed to pass to next shift. We have little bins where we put these reports so the next shift can find them.

I work PM's and the NOC shift comes in at 2300. We get done with PM's at 2315. I always leave my "pink sheets" in their respective bins before or shortly after the noc shift comes in so they can read and question me before it is my time to leave. However, this one particular nurse delights in coming in, gossipping with her cohorts, and then TELLS me as I am out the door to give her verbal report. One of these days I would like to have the guts to say to her "read the pink sheets". Yes, she is a bully, not just to me but everyone on the unit. Yes, she writes everyone up if they breathe wrong. She wrote me up once for not giving her report. I went in to talk with the manager as the mgr called me in. I asked the mgr then why do we have written report if it is to be verbal? She told me just to deal with this nurse. Pacify her. Bull crap. I am not staying over for a half hour just to listen to her jawjack with her cohorts and when I try to butt in with report they look at me like I violated them. She too will ask me stuff that could be looked up in the chart (same way I find out this info in the first place) just so she doesn't have to get off her dead a** and do it herself. Sorry but the animosity has built for this nurse. Yes, if there is something critical about a pt then indeed I verbally tell the respective nurse but if it is to be written report then that is how I am doing it!!!!!!

Right, as usual. Just dealing with this one person won't prepare you to deal with other forms of being pushed around (though certainly START here, since this is where you are right now).
