I have a good friend that is graduating soon from NS. I would like some gift ideas for him. He's a great guy that has sacrificed a lot to get through school. He's really glad to be done (actually kind of in that stunned mode right now) and is looking forward to starting a job.
What did you receive when you graduated from NS that really meant something to you? If you haven't graduated yet, what would YOU like to receive that would be really cool.
Ideas?

Many people get a stethoscope. I got my daughter a stethoscope (Littman, expensive high quality) and a BP cuff, both in her favorite color. You can't go wrong with giving a Littman scope.
Also, anything indicating RN. I used to get a catalog from back east that had lots of goodies for nurses. They used to offer a wall hanging or plaque, name of person, with RN after name in nice frame. I really miss not getting that catalog. Have not seen it for several yrs. Maybe they went out of business.
For a guy: A very nice money clip, have it engraved with his name and the letters RN.
Other ideas: First yr membership in ANA: (Dues around $300-$400). Or more practical: fee for first year of malpractice insurance.
Something else practical: gift certificate with the uniform catalogs or stores in his city that sell uniforms. Hope these ideas help.
Oh, and don't forget a real nice congratulatory dinner at Red Lobster or a nice steakhouse!!

I got a cute little critical care book, called "Fast facts by kathy white".

I already had a steth, but I agree that anything personalized would also be nice.
Also, I love the idea of a gift cert to a nice restaurant...

Depends on where he is in life too.
I am going to finally get the heck out of my parents house after I graduate so I am hoping to get some household type items for graduation. I also wouldn't mind some uniform gift certificates (just make sure he doesnt have to wear a uniform at his new job). Another thing that will really come in handy is a nice pen. For my paramedic class the freshman class bought up all cross pens with our names engraved on them, and I still have mine. Everytime I use it it reminds me of my journey through medic school. Hope this helps.

Did I read that right......Malpractice insurance? R.N's have to have their own "malpractice insurance"?
Do a search for the many threads on this site concerning malpractice insurance. Any licensed nurse who does not carry their own insurance is playing with a serious handicap.
Thanks for all the great ideas.
My friend turned 60 this year and has completed nursing school all at the same time. Quite an accomplishment, if I do say so! He's an Engineer turned RN....
I'm quite sure he's got a good stethoscope already but something personalized would be cherished. I'm hoping I have time to locate something soon.
Any more ideas?

Wow! what a thoughtful person you are....and to such a deserving friend....kudos to him for getting through at 60!
Does he like to journal? Sometimes, it's nice to jot down moments in our nursing career that were esp. meaningful....what about a really nice journal...hard bound.....with special paper.....just a thought...

Your buddy actually came to my class on Day 1 and gave some tips about how to get through nursing school. Hard to believe in one week I will be where he was - hopefully in 6 months I will be where he is now - graduating!
PS: It was the age and career that gave him away.

Nurses Station has one of the largest collections of nursing gifts.

Several of the framed prints make great graduation gifts.
I've purchased their framed stamp collection as retirement gift along with throws and recipients 100% pleased with items.
Thanks for being their to support this grad, we need him!
Nurses Station, mentioned by NRSKaren, is the company that I referred to in my post. When my friend graduated many yrs ago, I had a framed wall piece/plaque with her name, RN sent to her. It was inexpensive and she loved it. When I stopped getting their catalogs, I thought that maybe they had gone out of business (or maybe somebody rips off my catalogs). Nurses Station is great for nurses gifts. Your friend is 60, how great that he is becoming a new nurse. I'm sure he will be great. Please give him our regards.

I don't know how much money there is to spend, but I got myself a PDA when I graduated fully loaded with medical software. I actually use it everyday at work. Wish I would have had this in nursing school !
