getting out of nursing?

Yes I am an RN in Sales now after 17 years of doing patient care. I just could not work so much overtime, nights weekends and oncall anymore. I worked home health the last 11 years. I love my new job selling incontinence supplies. I work out of a home office with no nights, weekends holiday and NO PAGER for the first time in 11 years.

I plan to get a lecturing qualification for whem I'm old and decrepid and cant lift 300lb incontinant grannies up any more...

I think the teacher thing is good. They have great retirement, and one could still do nurse work during their summer break.

I think about it every single day! I pray that the right inspiration will come. But, for now, I am forced to ride thi$ gravy train in the nursing shortage at least until I pay off my school loans for the bsn I labored for x 11 years.

I just found a nice little per diem job (in addition to my home health job) for a very small case managament compnay, and the largest part of the biz is doing auditing. But since the owner needed case managers, but doesn't yet have a large calling for it, she is going to teach me to do some auditing. I'm psyched.

Call me crazy but I love the job I have now. School nursing = no nights, no weekends, no summers. All day hours. I have no dicipline problems like the teachers do. I really love it!

I'm sure you are in good company. Many nurses think of getting out of nursing every day. One problems is, despite not getting paid nearly what we are worth, without years of more education we can't even make as much as we do now! It's a trap that many of us make the most of while dreaming of what we really want to do when we grow up.

Interesting... my mother did just the opposite of your friends - she retired from teaching and went back to school to become an RN. I considered going into teaching, but for many reasons have decided to pursue nursing instead. Teaching has a lot of good aspects, but even my mother who's been in both professions agreed that I'm making the right choice. But that doesn't mean it's right for everyone! Good luck whatever you decide to do!

I no longer work as a nurse. My last job was in telephone triage, and nurses were treated as badly as they are in the hospital. Of all the nursing friends that I had, only one still works in a hospital. The others do stuff like case management, from an office, or are in entirely different careers. One is a librarian, another a psychologist, still another does computer stuff, and so on. At my last hospital job, at least half the staff was going to school or taking courses to enable them to get out of nursing. It was truly amazing.

I still have a license, but it is on inactive status. I am now a health/medical writer, and write a lot about nursing issues.

I wanted a new profession for the longest time. I dreamed about becoming a waitress.

But now I love my job. It took a while to figure where to work....I got the job and now I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!
