get off freakin' Facebook--there is work to be done!

Published

I asked the tech to take 5-10 minutes of her time to walk my very sweet patient when she got him out of the bathroom. I go in his room a half hour later and he tells me she didn't even offer to walk with him. Mind you this is a frail 89-year-old who isn't going to be able to walk very far so it would only take a few minutes. So, even though I'm behind as all get out, I walk with him. No less than 15 minutes later I walk past the nurses station and this tech is on Facebook--I wanted to wring her neck.

Don't get me wrong I work with many wonderful techs but I could do without this one--burns me up--she had only been on the clock 2 whole hours so I was very glad that she already had time to check Facebook!

Now that I got that off my chest I can go to bed without stewing about it. Goodnight folks.

When I am at school and go to the library to use the computers. There are so many people on Facebook it is a shame. School is to learn not socialize on Facebook. There is a time and place for everything.

No offense, but this is something I have to disagree with - while yes, school is to learn, the library is free access. A lot of people can do homework and "Facebook" at the same time - myself included. A lot of the time it's a good stress relaxer.

While I agree Facebook/Myspace/anything isn't appropriate at work, at the school it's different - some people don't have internet access anywhere else.

Just my :twocents:.

Well at my university if the librarian sees someone on Facebook and there is a line of students waiting to do their homework on the computers. They have to get off the computers. This one girl sat next to me and was on Facebook for 3 hours! At my community college they had signs up saying "no Facebook or myspace".

You can use the computers in our library and our school for anything (except Media), that said if their is a line for the computers they put a 30 min limit on them. Some people go to the library for their internet access and to rent movies and all kinds of stuff. It's one of the perks of a library. I know lots of people that don't have internet at home so they use the library. I don't think it's anyone's business what someone chooses to use their time on when they are at the library, it's not like at work where you are getting paid to work. IMO

I used to have to go to the public library for internet/computer access. The line was long and it took forever to get time on the computer. It would frost my case to see someone put a small stack of books next to the computer, then walk a few steps away to extend the range of their social conversation with another. Tell the librarian, and "oh, well" was the attitude received. These people don't even bother with facebook or myspace. They are in the library to talk to their friends and take up space doing it. Inconsiderate.

That is the nice thing about having the time limits. We also have a couple computer labs at school as well and like 4 branches of the library in my city so it's pretty nice. One of the branches is attached to my school and it has extended hours for students.

The only problem with your suggestion is that, in my institution, a lot of our activity is web based (from looking up drugs at an approved subscription service like Uptodate.com, to assigning transport jobs for patient movement, not to mention daily department email, etc). So the internet has become an essential part of how our particular hospital communicates and does business.

Like I had stated before, it really isn't the internet itself, but rather what people use it for. Like the telephone, some choose to use it for personal business (while on the employers dime) that it becomes counterproductive or disruptive.

Our com doesn't require internet access. If does allow certain education websites, but that is it. Otherwise all the people who are not disciplined and professional enough will play "like mice when the cat is away."

It will be too tempting.

They blocked Media, huh? The Downtown Public Library in my city wouldn't even do that!! Some of the local transient population would spend the afternoon firing up the xxx pics. A number of teachers and Girl Scout leaders complained, but the librarians said it was their right to look at whatever they wanted since it was a public library. I think last I checked they were considering some type of shield device so that wasn't viewable by anyone walking by.

A public library that I used to frequent posted signs all over stating how people with inappropriate (read lacking) hygiene would be asked to leave and charged with trespassing if they refused to leave.

OP, i am wondering, what would have happened if you simply shut the monitor off? she WAS being insubordinate after all!

What?? Don't they realize that's discrimination? Call the ACLU!! And Gloria Allred!! ;) (insert appropriate sarcasm alert)

Our computers at work are not for play. You can be sure that management is aware of computer use, and employees that use a computer for other than work are counseled and then let go. They might not even be counseled since everyone know you are suppose to work at work. You're fired!!!There is too much work to do. I'm disgusted. This person needs to be reprimanded by you, and then your superior.
