Gerontology....Who has or is taking this class soon???

Published

Who's taking it winter 2? Have you gotten your book? Are you buying or renting?

Also, if you have taken it, any advice? :D

Specializes in Correctional Nursing; MSN student.

Sweet! it's going to be just fine...one module at a time.

Now, now lets not panic! It doesn't pay to look too far ahead....it's only stress inducing! I think most of us are in the same boat so we can get thru it together. Anybody in section 131?

I am in section 131 with you. I am also taking fashion and culture. The blackboard stuff is killing me. i am totally lost, cant find what to do next.....

I have not looked past mod 1 in 410.

ewww. Did the pre-assessment thingy. I suck! Hope this isn't a vision of things to come ....

I thought I was going to do well. 57% !!!

61.53% for me. There has been no communication from TA in my section.

What section are you in? I'm in 128 (I think) and no communication from our TA. I'm quite disappointed by that. All of my other classes, there was very good communication with the TA from the start, I feel as though it set the tone of the class. That being said, this one is NOT off to a good start. The welcome letter in the getting started section does not even state who our TA is, just our instructor.

Those of you who have gotten communication from your TA's with tips for the weeks, would you mind copying and pasting the communication here for those of us whose TA's haven't yet posted anything?

Thanks :)

here is the majority of it - i didn't copy the part about my specific ta. cut the initial part about assignment 1 off - if was a copy of the page from epic

form location

the assignment document should be download as a microsoft word document. the assignment form has each question listed and a space below to answer the question. each question should be answered in 2-3 well-developed paragraphs. a well-written paragraph contains at least 3 well-developed sentences. citations are to be utilized in the paragraphs and references are to be placed at the end of the paper. double space and indent the content in the paragraph space. center the word ‘references’ on a separate page.

there are three questions to review in the assignment one – see the printable instructions. evaluate the global impact of an aging population in the world and the united states.

  1. what systems does the aging population impact – financial (social security), health care (medicare), housing, and family systems. – 10 points
  2. explain the need for exemplary care for older adults – 10 points

  • what does it look like, how is it different from the care of the general population

  1. describe the role of the professional nurse in providing exemplary care for older adults. remember this section is worth 20 points – consider how the nurse should be involved in healthcare, wellness programs, housing, chronic disease management

together, apa, citations, references, grammar formatting, and 2-3 well developed paragraphs are worth 10 points.

discussion boards – the postings are to be of quality (bsn level work). citations and references should be used. any discussion board post that does not have a citation/reference will have a 0.5 point deduction for each of these and 1 point will be deducted after week 1. you need to draw from your readings and textbook to support your discussion.

many in the nursing profession would argue that there is a significant shortage of gerontological nurses. this observation is startling considering that the national institute on health reports a ‘gerontological explosion’ of older adults in the united states and around the world. according to your textbook, gerontological nursing is an often neglected area in basic nursing education. in this discussion topic, we will look at the reasons why gerontological nursing is an underserved area of practice. this assignment is worth 10 points, or 3% of your final grade. to view grading requirements for this discussion posting, please click the rubric button in the lower, right corner of the discussion board screen.

directions

after reading the assigned chapters and articles, draft a response to the following questions:

  • what does the term ‘gerontological nurse’ mean to you?
  • why do you think so few students choose gerontological nursing as a specialty?
  • what would increase interest in this area of nursing?

your response should consist of complete sentences and should be at least one complete paragraph but no more than three paragraphs. also include references and citations.

post your individual original message by end of day, friday of module 1.

in addition to posting your response, read the postings of other students, and post an individual response to at least two other student postings. do you agree or disagree? state the rationale for your thinking.

reply to at least two other student postings by end of day, sunday, module 1.

week 2 – so you are prepared!

other hints video assignment – tuesdays with morrie. there are several options to accomplish the assignment in week 2

  1. reading the book
  2. renting the movie – available from netflix
  3. in week 2 there is a video from an interview with ted koppel and morrie. the link is there for the interview
  4. the movie is on you-tube also and is in 11 parts: tuesdays with morrie (1999) - 1/11 - youtube (copy this link into your browser for the 1/11 of the movie_

this movie is used for the assignment in week 2. please copy the assignment document and be aware of the questions you will need to complete while watching the movie, video or reading the book. it is a movie that you can put on and listen to the audio as there is not much action. the movie is heartfelt and inspiring, so it is worth watching.

I guess I didn't do too horrible on the pre-assessment, I got a 73 % on it...there's hope for theses tests at least, in comparison to the tests in Family Nursing...
