We took a stand against our Clinical Instructor...

>>> Sorry - this is a big vent and may be very long!!

Today we took a stand against our clinical instructor (and now I'm a little worried).

Our CI is new to the school and new to the hospital. She was a last minute replacement, but claims she has 10 years teaching experience. We are half way into our rotation.

The earliest she has arrived was 15 minutes late - and that was on the first day. Since then, she insisted that we start clinicals 1 hour early (which put a strain on some of our schedules), and has been at least 30 minutes late every day.

When she does show up, she only has a list of patients on the floor. She does not check with the head nurse about who is getting discharged. She does not check the medication chart about what kinds of meds (and what time) the patient will get. She brings in her list and randomly assigns us a patient... AFTER we have already been waiting up to 45 minutes for her to show up! We usually do not hit the floor for 2-2.5 hours after our clinical started. Sometimes we end up with nothing to do (due to discharges and no meds to pass). She told us to bring our books to study, and to hide in the conference room:banghead:

There are other frustrations - wasting time talking endlessly about herself, her family, every health problem she has ever had, etc, etc...

Although I would not say she is mean to us, she can be condescending to some of the patients (behind their backs), primarily the overweight or mentally impaired.

Our professors that teach the theory part of the class are aware of the problems (heard it from the grapevine, I guess), but can't do anything about it. They have been supportive of us, and have given us some advice.

The official school policy is that a student must wait 10 minutes for an instructor to show up. Our professor said that certainly after 20 minutes we can assume they will be absent.

So.. today, we waited 20 minutes, then as a group, got up and left. We all went home. I really wanted to talk to her first (as a group) and then leave tomorrow if she is late again, but I agreed to go with the majority.

Now I am really worried. This woman will be writing our evaluations. I know she will be angry, and have no idea what will happen tomorrow. I think we have enough documentation to put administration on our side, but this could get really ugly.

Anyone ever had anything like this happen to them???

Good for you! You should be so proud of yourself! Finally, someone stood up for the little rights that nursing students have!

The very first day of clinicals, she was 15 minutes late. We were standing in front of the nursing station wondering what to do. We really didn't think she would show up. When she got there, we said "Hey, what happened? we were worried that you weren't going to make it!"

She said, "Oh, I'm just being fashionably late!"

No apology whatsoever.

And 15 minutes late was the earliest she ever showed up.

With that kind of attitude, I'm glad you and your classmates took the stand that you did. There will be times in the future when you and your classmates will have to take a stand to advocate for your patients.

We had a tutor like that; when she did come in she was all over the place, rambling, not making sense. She was retired early on 'health grounds'.

I guess this thread has been beaten to death...

but I wanted to share what just happened.

I just got a call from our Director of Nursing. Our Clinical Instructor has been replaced with another instructor, one that we have all worked with before. I know she is tough, but fair, and a very good teacher. I am thrilled!

I think because we all stuck together, had very good documentation, and followed the proper channel, it worked out well for us. We were all expecting to have to meet with the Dean, but it wasn't even necessary.

I appreciate all of the support that I have received from this comminity, and I hope that anyone in a similar situation will not be afraid to do the right thing. Sometimes the school does listen and respond!

I hate being the reason that some one is let go or whatever, but when they do it to themselves, you can't feel so bad about it. I'm glad you all took the stand together and it worked in your favor! That is great, and I'm sure your remaining clinicals will be a much better experience!!! :yeah:

YES! I am really surprised that they moved that fast. Surprised and so glad for you and your class.

Good for you for standing up for yourselves. That CI had a screw loose.

Glad it worked out!! Lets just hope ur new instructor isn't best buds with the fired one!!

wow! I am really impressed with how your school handled this!

It makes me insanely jealous of your program.

Anyhow, good work!

Wow! I am sooooo glad it worked out for you guys!!!! I actually told my clinical instructor what was going on (she is so cool more like a student but still instructs us and is sooooo freaking unbelievably intellegent! I absolutely LOVE her to death), and she said that she would have done the EXACT same thing. Had she EVER done that to one of her clinical classes she would EXPECT they would do the same thing. A policy is a policy for a reason (I can show you in my hand book where it says we leave after 15 minutes of an instructor not showing). My CI actually said that they did the same thing when she was in school. Their class left clinical when their CI didnt show up and it never happend again! She wasn't dismissed but she sure was ashamed.

I actually had a similar experience with a theory instructor. She was our psych instructor of all people. She was never late to our class BUT she treated our class like we were ignorant children who didn't deserve to be in her graces. Classes before our's had warned us about her "bipolar moments" said that if she was wearing black pearls to watch out cause she was in a bad mood (all this rang true and then some). After our first test she said that if we missed any math questions we need to go back to fourth grade and relearn math!!! (mind you there were grain questions on there and ped's questions which we have not taken at this point). So anyhow she accused our class of cheating because we were discussing how to do math before one of our tests. So she came in to the class and BEFORE THE TEST says to us btw I have changed every math question on this test so don't think you're going to cheat your way to passing! *****! So anyhow there were several other things that went horribly wrong in our class, instead of keeping our head low we decided we were going to our don and asked that she not administer any more of our tests and they did grant us this request. One of my classmates that did not make it through her pit of doom is re-taking her class this semester and she told me that it is COMPLETELY different, that the instructor is totally supportive of the class and is treating them like the adult nursing students they are! I feel like we made a difference and am so glad that even though it was a struggle for us it has changed for the future students at our school (she is the only theory instructor for psych afterall...).

I just came into this thread today and am so surprised by this whole situation. I'm so glad you posted about this michigangirl so we can all take a note out of your book in how to stand up to someone like that.

And that CI deliberately made your class wait for 45 minutes before she came down! A very childish tactic on her part! Well if you were going to report her for being late she was going to make you wait even longer. HA! backfired on her!
