What did you make it through nursing school without ever doing that you SWORE you would have to do?????

I am only one-day into clinicals but I met one 2nd year student who has yet to insert a foley catheter!

This can be fun!

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

Start an IV. I absolutely love them, but never got the opportunity in school. Now, I get my fair share of them each shift.

I graduate in December and I have yet to cry or insert a foley. :)

Specializes in Cardiac/Telemetry.

I graduate in December too and I have yet to insert an NG tube. :D (I know this is not that commonly done, but it'd be interesting to do!)

Specializes in Staff nurse.

...got ya beat! I've been a nurse for 5 years and haven't inserted an NG tube. Tried on one pt before he swung...

Specializes in Maternal - Child Health.

I made it thru 11 years of professional nursing practice without ever taking care of a sick adult! (And God willing, I never will:)

Wow this makes me feel better. I also graduate in December and have never inserted a Foley or an NG tube. Never had the opportunity. I thought I would be the only student who hadn't done those by now.

Specializes in ER; HBOT- lots others.

there are so many numerous things i havnt done. you are SO not alone. lots of us have not used the skills, thats what worries me too. i have gotten to see TONS of awesome stuff, but not that i could do..

Specializes in NICU.

I went through nursing school without ever putting an IV in either!

First week in the NICU though I got an IV in ..... first try, first success. So I guess not having the opportunity in school didn't hinder me!

Lots of on-the-job training, you guys don't have to worry! :)

Specializes in Cardiac.

I made it through nursing school without ever...

.......pulling an all nighter! I was fortunate that I never had to do this! Most of my tests were easy.

Also, I never had to start an IV on a baby, which I feared the most before I started NS. In fact, I really never wanted to even touch sick babies! Eeeks!

Specializes in NICU.

Thank God we all like different things so we don't have to do what we don't want to! I'm like Jolie in that I hope I never have to care for a sick adult! :D

Just something about poking an IV needle into someone that can talk to me would freak me out!

I never inserted an NG tube . . .and have only done 2 in 9 years.

I got my first IV in clinical in an ER. Very cool.

Yep, it is the luck of the draw, unfortunately.
