Nursing Students General Students

I just found out today, that my school has a test every semester in dosage calculations. In order to stay in the program, a student needs to get 90% correct. There is only one try. Don't you think this is tuff? :crying2:

Math mistake=MED ERROR!!!:stone

Exactly, which is why i don't see this as being too hard on people.
If my nurse only got 20% of my meds correct in a day, I'd be p***ed (if not dead, considering one of mine is for cardiac reasons). I relate dose calc tests to real life.

Exactly!! I don't think it's possible to take 'nursing math' too seriously.....the first time I took one of those math quizzes, I got a 95%, but on the one problem I missed, I 'killed' a patient with a tenfold overdose of KCl. :stone Lesson learned, and cheaply, thank God!

The CC I'm at requires ALL students applying for health related degrees to take "MATH for HEALTH CAREERS"---you cannot be accepted without it. the course description follows:
" the student will convert units of measure within and among the metric, apothecary, and avoirdupois systems of measurement; solve pharmacology problems; apply algebraic concepts to signed numbers, formulas, and graphs; and use statistical software to analyze data with descriptive statistics and linear regression. "
WOW! you had better be prepared for dosage calculations after this class!:)

We had one med test that we had to get an 85 on and we are having another soon that we have to get a 90 on, but neither has very difficult content math-wise...it's not like major algebra or calculus or something. That's alot coming from me b/c I've never been good at math and almost have a phobia about it at this point

We have a test each semester also. 20 questions - only allowed to miss 2 for a score of 90. No calculators and we need to show all the work. We only have 2 chances to pass. If you fail, you are thrown out of the program. We've lost many to the math - 3 or 4 the 1st semester, 3 or 4 the 2nd. Everyone passed the 3rd and we haven't taken it yet this semester We use a workbook titled Calculate w/ Confidence.

I am in my second semester in a PN program. We use the same book, but are not tested on med calc's like that. Our med calc's are added into each chapter test. Should I be concerened?

90% or higher two tries. If you don't make it you can't continue on in the program until a later date.

Yep, I've got mine tomorrow on IV calculations. Just keep doing the practice problems and try not to overthink! I did that on my pretest, think simple. :)
Did your school give you a CD with practise questions on it?
They just gave us the recommended textbook and each term they give us a booklet of practice questions. They also give a pretest so you get the gist of what the questions will be like, then you have two more chances to get 90% or you're out.
Man, sounds like I need to be a little concerned... We dont do anything like that.
I have my text books, and I know the calculations, but, we do not practice as a class or get quized like you do.

We also have one. We need to make 90% and have three attempts. Last semester the entire class scored above 90%.
This is the same as my school requires.........its not bad tho, i just practice a lot b4 each exam, and i always score very well.
