Covering up the Practical Nursing on my Student badge.

Nursing Students General Students

This makes me so mad:( . Last semester was our 1st semester in nursing school & clinicals for LPN. Well, I was approached by several people in my 5 weeks of clinicals commenting on how they loved my nursing cap. (So do I). BUT, they all looked down on my badge to see that I was a Practical Nursing Student. It was the "Practical Nursing" that changed the tone of the conversation.

Now I know how women feel that have big "boobs":chuckle & people/guys stare. Some would ask WHY aren't you going to be a real nurse? OR, don't you want to get paid good money? OR, better yet, they stop & say "Oh" & the conversation ends. What the H--- does that mean?

It's not just me, other classmates get same kind of reactions. Although, some think it is because of the cap they get treated weird.

I told my instructor what I was going to do & she said I couldn't. Well, I still have other ideas  . Anyone have any advice on how to set people straight w/out going postal?:roll

The best way always is to come up soemthing so unexpected it is funny i.e. "So you are a practical nurse?" Answer "Well last year I was an impractical nurse but now I have been promoted!":) or "Wait until next year when they finish reprogramming the computer and then we will all be virtual nurses":chuckle

Oh Honey~ Heck on what people say....

Are you proud you are going to be a LPN? Then don't worry about what they say or do!

Take my advice....don't get so stressed about something this small, cause your going to have enough to stress you in other things.....Gwenith had some good comebacks...use them!

Stand up and be proud of your accomplishment! :)

Good Luck!

If you cover it, you're putting the message out that you agree with them. Be proud of what you are. I was an LPN for 9 years before going back for my RN. I am as proud of anything I did then as I am of anything I do now.

Very good advice from the posters above. There's a cynic in every crowd, ignore them. They're the kind of people who have a sarcastic remark to say about EVERYTHING, not just what kind of nurse you are. Hold your head up high, be proud of your accomplishments. I have an idea for a name badge ... (your name), Proud to be an LPN!

.... and to heck with what some people say!

I haven't even started the LPN program yet and I get the same thing. Are you going to take a year off from school or go right into the RN program? If I want to be a LPN and thats all then thats all. I might go onto the RN program but maybe not. It would be like asking a medical student "Are you going to be a surgeon?" Like being a doctor without that is nothing? I feel the same. When I am a nurse (LPN) then I am a nurse. Nancy

I get that all the time, luckily not from many that i work with, but from people who've seen me out in public with my face in a textbook. Latest answer for the "Oh an LPN, so are you going back for your RN?" is "Sure right after you pay for me to go to school, then i will". I got tired of being nice around that comment.

I agree with a previous poster that making a cute/flip remark will stop the questions. Be proud you are a practical nursing student. You are working hard to achieve your goal and anybody who has a negative comment is probally just dissatisfied with their job or role in life.
