Ugh, every year we have to do yet another annoying, repetitive, HIPAA or some other Gawd awful online inservice. Is there an end? Will the healthcare system ever deem me HIPAA compliant? Will they ever consider that I've absorbed their vital teachings for more than a year?

Ha. I'm not a nurse (yet) but I work in clinical research. The paperwork. And training. Beyond obnoxious.

Most facilities have a requirement of annual competencies that have to be completed by all staff.

Ive been a nurse for 43 years. I can do competencies in my sleep.

I work for a private duty agency & we have to do all this every year, too. Must be a requirement for accreditation.

Of all the annoying things I have to put up with at work, the annual competencies are so far down on the list that they're not even worth mentioning.

Well, you could look at it like this: you are getting paid to sit at a computer. You aren't running your legs off, and you can ignore any call lights that you see or hear. How's that for putting a positive spin on a boring, repetitive task?

I figure it must be government mandated, because everyone seems to have to do them, regardless of what kind of nursing they work in. In this day of stalkers and identity theft, I guess they figure we can't be too careful.

If you want to laugh, watch an old police show from the '70s, like "Starsky and Hutch" or "Charlie's Angels" when the episode takes place in a healthcare setting.

Hutch: "Is Mrs. Jones a patient in this hospital?"

Nurse: "Yes, she's in room 415, but she's being discharged first thing tomorrow morning. Her son, Don, is supposed to pick her up."

HIPAA? What's that? Ah, the good old days! :roflmao:

We do not get paid for the time we spend online. We only get paid for the skills check we do in the office.

I'm just generally annoyed with constant computer competency reminders from my wonderful manager who has got to be the most organized person I know. God bless her. Now we are changing systems so I have to actually go do some God forsaken hard copy version at my place of work at inconvenient hours.

Yes, I'm sure it's the result of our wonderful government and its bureaucrats and desk jockeys, saving lives one mandatory checklist or inservice at a time. ..

Specializes in Emergency, Telemetry, Transplant.

Plus I get tired of the "communicable disease" training we have to do every year. "True or false…you can catch HIV from someone who sneezes in the next room." Ugh.

Really? Wow. How do they get away with not paying you for something that they mandate that you do?

Specializes in Med/Surg, Academics.

When it comes to the online competencies every year, we spend more time telling each other how to fudge the system so that it registers the training "complete" than actually doing them.

Click, click, click, click.............exit. Take quiz, fail?, check answers, take quiz, pass. MOVING ON! That's all you need to know.

I did mine in one sitting this year using the above strategy. Still took me TWO hours to get through them all without reading a single slide.
