What's your relationship with the other nurses on your floor?

Do you all get along for the most part? Do you eat meals with them or just get away and use that for alone time? Could you see yourself hanging out with them outside of work?

We are all very close actually. 10 of us play basketball every week. The surgeons hang out with us for happy hours too. Some of us mtn bike, we all go out and drink/eat a couple times a month. I feel like I have a bunch of brothers and sisters I work with. I'm the big brother as the boss.

Hmmm... it's a mixed group. There are a couple I cannot stand and try to avoid. The majority are just co-workers, cool when you need lift help- but I wouldn't go out with them. There are only a couple I would do things after work with, but I haven't yet.

Argo....you know thats not the norm. Most units are staffed with females....because most nurses are females. I always made it a point to get along with everyone, but I don't eat lunch. Had a few I hung out with outside of work....and that was trouble. Never again. Be friendly....nice....but be careful.

I have one male nurse that has a wife that doesn't let him out and one male nurse that comes out for bball. The other 15 rns are female. I have 6male and 8 female scrub techs and a male endorsement tech. All of the male techs go out and play ball with us. Moat of the female rns an techs come hang out for happy hour. There are 4-5 that never come out because of home life but we all get along. ,

LOL. My phone autospells. Endorsement = endoscopy

It also helps that we are all relatively young 25-35 with similar interests.

umm....i agree...where i work is mixed. the day nurses associate outside of work a good bit. the evening and night nurses stay solitary outside of work as far as hanging out goes. evening and night nurses are pretty close, like the day nurses are with each other, while inside work. However, we all tend to get along despite our quirks and sometimes huge differences in opinions. we only have 1 nurse whom none of us can stand to work with or be around....and thats of her own creation. the rest of us tend to really stick together and we support each other more times than not. We each know who we can depend on when we need each other, so thats nice. when my wallet was stolen 2 yrs ago (the day after we got paid) I was so tore up about it, i had several coworkers offer to help me out, even offered to buy my sons diapers and things til my wallet was located.....luckily it was located 2 days later and the punk who took it only got about 200 bucks ...still....as mad as i was i was also so glad to have coworkers who would be willing to do that for me in my day of need. Id do the same for them.

Hmmm mixed for me too. I have no people I work with whom I would call friends, though I get along with most of my coworkers for the most part. I never hang with people outside of work... the two times I have (one was a unit holiday party and the other was a going-out-for-drinks with my preceptor and other nurses when I and a colleague had finished orientation. In both cases, I was completely ignored by the everyone. I eat meals in the break room, sometimes at the same time as my coworkers, but then, I am also pretty much ignored as well. People are nice enough to me, but don't seem the slightest bit interested in me as a person (though they do ask on occasion how my daughter is).

The fact that I am male and 48 years old contributes to the fact that I'm invisible. There is one other male RN who's the same age as me (we're the two oldest nurses on the unit) but he has the most seniority on the unit and as such doesn't have to put up with as much bs as the rest of us do and is kind of in his own world.

As bleak as that sounds, I get along well with people and when working I feel like I have a good rapport with the majority of my coworkers.

I have 2 friends at work that I do playdates with about twice a month. We work part time and have toddlers. There are a couple others i have gone out with a time or two. I get along with the others but dont see them outside of work unless its a whole unit thing. We do babyshowers etc as a large group every one in a while.

I work in a place where there is hostility among the nurses. There is one nurse on my job whom I confide in. I have been bullied by other nurses and back stabbed. I don't why, I try my best to be nice. We don't hang out outside of work. There are cliques but I'm not in them. Idk if its my age or that I'm a new grad, not sure.

We have a mix of people at work....I think age is what can really separate who hangs out with who outside of work. I get along with most everyone despite the age; some more than others.

At this current hospital, I notice a trend of the the younger RNs striving to be big buddies with the residents. I laugh when I overhear an RN bragging to another about having a conversation with 'the doctor' about a non-work issue; or that they are making plans to meet a group of the docs out for drinks. Seriously, doctors are just people, like anyone else.
