What specialty do you work in and why do you Likeit? Hate it?

  1. I recently posted a thread regarding why i hate med-surg nursing due to the abuse of the nurses and not being able to give quality care and how i LOVE critical care nursing. This sparked my interest regarding the topic and I am curious about what areas of nursing all of you currently work in or have worked in in the past and what is it about your specialty that you either Love or Hate?

    Thanks for posting!

NICU - LOVE IT! Love to teach the babies' parents how to care for their special little one.

Hospice-love it. More time with patients, less time spent charting, and having weekends and evenings off is great too.

I was formerly on med surg Hated it. I hated being inside for over 12 hours, never seeing the sky, I ran the whole time, spent more time charting than on patient care, and never got to sit down for a meal.

It seems that I am still trying to find my niche but I have worked in:
Med/Tele -- do NOT like tele
    Med/Surg briefly-- HATED IT
Home Health --Like it. I enjoy spending enough time with the patients to get to know them and having time to actually teach my patients. PRN is much better than FT though because you get to choose how much you want to work.

Med/Surge: Eh. Mostly didn't like it, but can't say I ever HATED it.
    Geriatric Psych: LOVED it.
Child Psych: Hate it, hate it, hate it. Thought that I would love it, until I realized that 90 percent of my
patients were going to be pure young demons of hell.

I've always worked the OR..I love it because most of the time, it's pretty much instant gratification. You see pretty quickly how you've helped that patient. Also, one patient at a time and you don't have to deal with obnoxious visitors. Also, if you are a hands on, technically oriented person, you're going to thrive. I also get to scrub here and there, which is neat.

What I hate is that some really maladjusted personalities exist there..not everyone of course, but a few bad apples can really make it miserable.

Been a nurse for 3 years and have spent that entire time in the cardiac ICU.

Love: Crashing patients (for the adrenaline!), immediate post op open heart recovery, and the team I work with.
Hate: The backbiting and the prima donna doctors who throw a tantrum when you call in the middle of the night.

I tried many different areas of Nursing before I landed in Inpatient Hospice. I do like it, Are there things Id like to change? Sure but considering some of the other places Ive worked, (Med Surg, Ventilator hospital, Tele,) this is not bad.
