I hear ya! The burnout started a few years ago for me. I still do a great job & do feel rewarded at times, but the excitement of nursing has dimmed. I've been short staffed so many times, that I always go in expecting the worst (sad, huh). I wish I liked it more, because they pay is great where I live, and it's a "hot" career right now.I'm sick of "hitting the ground running" all the time, the constant sense of urgency & lack of resources.
I've swapped acute specialties a few times, too, hoping that I would find my niche. It has helped a little, but it's still the same stuff, different floor. I'm going to try something completely different next year! That's right- out of healthcare. My eyes are constantly perusing the classifieds.
I like the helping/human part of the job. I'm just sick of the unrealistic work load, stress, etc. It always feels like the floor is in crisis when I come on shift and I have to run around putting out fires every time. Not my idea of satisfying work. I don't mind putting out some fires, but it's just...too much.
Good luck in your search! Hope you find a better match. Your nursing experience will serve you well no matter what you do!
