The most jobs

I have two currently because I just left my third. I work 24 hours/ week as bedside staff in a Pediatric ICU. Night shift. My secondjob is as a clinical instructor for a local university. It is contract work, and I can work a lot of hours one month, and none the next. The position I just left was as a private duty nurse for a vent dependent toddler. Night shift. He is now off the vent, and they no longer need overnight nursing.

Scheduling was not too bad. I have my PICU schedule far in advance. My instructor gig is predictable and during the day- so no conflict there. And my PDN job I worked PRN so had complete control over my hours. No minimum, no required weekends- basically I conferred with kid's mom and we came up with a schedule.

I've had three jobs at once. This was in 2008...

1) Full-time floor nurse at a nursing home, Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 2:30pm.

2) Part-time floor nurse at another nursing home, Saturday and Sunday from 6:00pm to 6:00am.

3) PRN nurse, worked the occasional 2:00pm to 10:00pm shift during the week at a third nursing home.

I was an LVN during those days. I was planning to enroll in an LPN-to-ASN bridge program the next year and wanted a stockpile of money in my savings account just in case.

Once I enrolled in the bridge program in January 2009, I eventually switched to the weekend double shift at the third nursing home that consisted of two 16-hour shifts from 6:00am to 10:00pm every Saturday and Sunday. This schedule allowed me to attend nursing school during the week. This was my only job by May 2009. I graduated in March 2010.

I have had 4 jobs at once, but I was working exclusively PRN so I could have the time off with my family that I wanted. The jobs were:

1. Local Nursing Home - One 12 hour night shift a week

2. Other local nursing home - 1 or 2 shifts per month, mostly for sick calls

3. Home Health agency - day shifts, just went in to cover visits when census was up or for sick calls

4. Sub for the school nurse - less than once per month

I usually kept as busy as I wanted, did this for a few years.

Three jobs is the most I have ever worked, and I have done that for years. One job is VERY PRN. The other two are consistent so no scheduling issues. I am (hopefully) going to be full time in nursing school again next year, so my work schedule will have to change which makes me nervous.

I currently have 5 part time jobs. I did not plan this it just happened.

1. Urgent care-one shift per month 12-5.

2. Another urgent care 1-3 shifts per month plus after hours from 6P-8P or when we see the last patient.

3. Wed & Fri 9-5 at Asthma/Allergy/Immunology clinic.

4. One weekend per month at psych hospital doing H&Ps on new admits. I will also be covering holidays. Depending on number or admits, I can be there many hours, each H&P takes about one hours. I also do medical consults.

5. Health risk assessments for another company. PRN, no clinics in December, none scheduled yet for January. This past February I had zero hours with them. Usual hours are 0630-1400, I usually work Mon/Tue/Thurs

Amazingly enough none of the jobs conflict with each other. My rule is who ever schedules me first is who I commit to. I was teaching in an LPN program last year, then quit and the following month was hired at the asthma/allergy clinic. Right now, I have been asked to work Mon & Tues at the second urgent care which is nice since the health risk company has not announced when clinics will be for Jan or Feb.
