anyone read any good nursing stories lately? Fiction, nonfiction? Right now I'm reading Nurse: The true story of Mary Benjamin. its by Peggy Anderson. was published in the 70's. My mom bought it for me, (" i read it when I was in nursing school!") So far, a pretty good book.

Specializes in ER/Trauma.

Just finished A Nurses' Story Life, Death, and In Between in an Intensive Care Unit by Tilda Shalof. Very good, would recommend it highly.

I also second the recommendation of We Band of Angels...looooved this book!

Any of the Echo Herron books as well.

Someone mentioned Peggy Anderson. She is a wonderful author. Her book Children's Hospital, while not all about nurses, per se, is a fabulous, heart-touching book; especially for anyone working peds.

Patients, Pain and Politics, by Mary Richards Rollins,RN/BSN. Mrs. Rollins was a WI state surveyor. She tells all, the corruption, the ineptitude, the beaurocratic nightmare. She ended up being fired and won in a lawsuit.True story, real eye opener for all who work in LTC.

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

Tilda also wrote "The Making of a Nurse" Very good read as well.

For something alittle different:

Trauma Junkie : Memoirs of an Emergency Flight Nurse by Janice Hudson.

I LOVED this book when I first read it.

Specializes in Med-Surg, ED.

"The Nightengale Sisters: The Making of a Nurse in 1880s America" compiled by Rosalind Franklin

"When the Nightengale Sang: A nurse's life in the 1950'a and 1960's" As told to Rosalind Franklin.

"Women at War: The Story of Fifty Military Nurses who served in Vietnam" by Elizabeth M Norman.

And I second the Tilda Shalof books. They are really great.

Specializes in Cardiac step-down, PICC/Midline insertion.

Keep these coming! I've really been wanting to read some good nursing books, fiction or nonfiction. I think they have a Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul too, and I've been wanting to read that.

a few years back I use to read author-- Echo Herron, ---she had a couple fiction books that were so good, she is a nurse, or was a nurse-- check that out, thay were awesome, sorry can't remember the titles.

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I've read "Bed Number Ten" and Tilda Shalof's books and loved them, as well.

One I didn't see mentioned yet is "A Final Arc of Sky" by Jennifer Culkin, a critical care nurse - it spans her career from NICU to flight nurse and is beautifully written.

Wow, I read Bed Number Ten and really liked it. I thought it showed how we get socaught up in our technology we forget the basic pt comforts. Echo Heron read and liked years ago.

While not nursing-related per se, I read and loved a book called The Birth House by Ami McKay a year or two ago. Historical fiction about a young woman who learns to be a midwife from an older local woman. It was definitely one of the better books I've read.
