Nurse's Week Festivities?

Is your facility planning on something fun and festive for staff? So far I've heard administration is planning massages and manicures but they are only for daytime staff who can afford to leave their areas for the length of a massage or manicure. I won't see any of that, but I guess someone will!

Daytime staff usually get treated to a free lunch of deli stuff sent to the units; evening staff usually gets whatever is left on the trays :(

I'm not full-time so I'm usually not around for all of it and my hours don't usually coincide with the "festivities". But I did get a pen one year. There's that. Except it didn't work but hey can't be picky lol!

Hey EP! Wouldn't it be a real hoooot if you could wrangle up all your 3-11 and 11-7 buddies and show up on 7-3 to get the benes?!?!

Make sure you all lunch there too.

see now I like how you think lol! Some years there have been notices up with the times each shift will have food brought in or stuff available to do or get, this year all I see so far is what happens by lunchtime. Maybe I'll get a NEW pen this year :)

My hospital tries to have activities for all shifts -- but of course, we can never hit every nurse at a convenient time. And over the years, we have decreased the amount of "give aways" and increased the amount of activities at which nurses are honored for their work, recognized for their achievements, etc. -- which I think is the way it should be. There would never be enough money to give really great gifts to everyone, so you might as well not give a cheap, cra**y one. It's better to use the money on some sort of celebration to honor the nurses than give something not worth anything.

I agree with you on that however in my facility they do give special awards out during that week. BUT there are just a few and they almost always go to the nurse managers or administration people! Last year a nursing assistant got one of the awards, I hate to think it but I believe it was in reaction to people's being so angry that only department managers got the Excellence ones that they caved and gave it to an actual "ordinary" person (who was a great aide!).

Patients and visitors have a tendency to heap the praise and write letters about the daytime staff, the ones they are awake for and the visitors see. When I worked days I got them every so often, it was nice. Evenings or nights, almost never. I'm the same nurse :)

As long as awards and recognition are given to just a small handful every year I think I'll just hope for my new crappy pen lol!!

To add to the "festive" atmosphere we were all told it would be fun to wear mismatched socks! We did that before, but honestly on any given day I could do that without realizing it and don't find it particularly "fun".

I wouldn't mind a card :)

I started nursing in a country where we didn't do anything for nurses' day, then moved to the USA, where we got a small gift every year. I'm back home now. I think admin really cant win as far as nurses' day gifts go. We are a bitter crowd. I do wonder how it would go over if they committed to an extra nurse each shift for the entitre nurses week. It would be appreciated, and we could see how much money would be saved if incidents decreased during that time.

No festivities. No kitchy gifts. Nothing. They sure went out of their way to gift our secretaries though. Flowers and coffee card. I am feeling the love dontcha know.
