our MSP floor can hold 23 patients. Nights we do it with 2 RN, 1 LPN and an aid only untill 10pm. (apparently no one puts on a call bell after 10pm....) So your RN is responsible for 11 or 12 patients for orders, assesements, IV meds. Our LPN's can pass po meds, do VS, care. but do not do assessments, Admits, Discharges or IV medications.
Days for same floor we have 2 RN, 2 LPN and 2 Aids, till 2pm, then just one Aid. The two LPN's split the floor for VS and PO meds. The RN's do the discharges, assess, admits, IV meds, Dr orders, and if there is a minute left, patient teaching.
The hospital I work at on the Med/surg floor, can hold up to 49pts, all private rooms, The nurse ratio is about 1:3-6 on days, and night nurse ratios are about 1:5-6
I'm a tech on days and our ratios are 1:4-6...but I've had up to 9pts if someone calls in but they'll usually send up other techs from different units to help with beds and baths and call lights! So it's never horrible... And pm techs are 1:5-7 , and night techs are 1:5-9pts...
LPNS on days usually split the patients and we usually have 2-3 working on
days... And 2 lpns working on pms... :)
I work evenings on a vascular med/surg. unit where the nurse to patient ratio is 1:5 (although lately they're trying to make it 1:6) and the CNA to patient ratio is 1:7-10 (the ratios are pretty much the same for both days and evenings) and on nights the ratio of nurse to patient is 1:10-12 and the CNA to patient ratio is 1:14-16.
