If a pt is not on coumadin, will their INR be low or naturally therapeutic?One of our pts who is not on coumadin had a PT/INR performed and it was low.

If the patient is NOT on coumadin, the INR should be negligible keeping in mind that therapeutic ranges are anywhere from 2-3.5 depending on what is being treated. Unless the patient is taking an herbal supplement that has coumarin (yes I spelled that right) AND/OR Warfarin qualities I would expect it to be

I work the Coumadin clinic. Persons that are not on Coumadin may have an INR of say 0.8, 0.9, which would be below therapeutic levels. I asked this question because we have a CoaguCheck machine that does a fingerstick to read the PT/INR within 3 minutes. Just to be joshing around, I did a fingerstick on another LPN and she got 0.9, so, we asked the provider and he stated that she is normal for a person who is not on anticoagulant therapy such as Coumadin, but he would readjust doses until it was at least 2.3, 2.4.

The average person not on blood thinners can range from 0.8-1.1 INR. Because of a persons diagnosis they want to have "thinner" blood than the average person. 2.0-3.5 depending on dx. To reduce risk of clots,etc.

I have checked mine to QC a machine and run 0.9 most of the time.

There is an old wives tale, don't know if it is true or not the fare skinned, red heads will have higher natural INRs.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I haven't worked with manyread head patients to know if it is true or not.

Therapeutic INR = 2-4 Generally those who are on Coumadin therapy

Everyone else should show below 2- which is normal for non thinning therapy people as far as i know..

Was there a flag on the INR that stated L?

It was 0.8. Our normal range is 1.9 to 3.4. We call MD for low, or hold until addressed next day for a high pt/inr. Thanks very helpful.

I heard that about redheads too. My husband is a redhead/fair skin and he had to have a pt done before surgical procedure.

my best guess to their answer would be that they answered it in relation to "NORMAL" or

therapeutic. Kind of silly since they didn't qualify it. Bottom line is simple. If NOT on Coumadin,

anything less than 1 is fine.. if the patient IS on coumadin.. anything less than 2 is NOT good.

I'd be much more worried if you asked me what it means if someones INR is 9 or 10.. in which

case I'd tell you to immediately get LOTS of bubble wrap, wrap them in it, and don't let ANYONE

touch them.. lol
