I am torn between 2 specialities

I am about to graduate with my BSN. I know I still have a few years that I want to work to gain experience but I am thinking about the future. Growing up I wanted to be a psychiatrist, which later turned in to becoming a PMHNP. However, the for the past two years I have been seriously considering CRNA. I have read that CRNAs make a bit more money than PMHNP, which is a factor of course. I also have read that the road to becoming a CRNA is a lot more in depth in terms of needing that critical care experience. Idk what to do. How did you decide on what you wanted to do?

Psych seems a bit more relaxed and the road to getting there is not as rough, but I've never been one to take the easy route. There are plenty of opportunities for both psych and crna. I just don't know!

People wanting to do CRNA for the money are a dime a dozen. Rarely do I find a CRNA hopeful that REALLY has a passion for anesthesia, putting in lines or managing pain. Do you really want to be a CRNA? Have you shadowed?

Psych NPs get paid pretty well too, probably the most out of the NP specialties.

I wanted to be a CRNA, but the issue with anesthesia is when it is good, it is very boring, and when it isn't boring-that's not good. Same with L&D, when it goes bad, it can be very bad.

If you are interested in the CRNA route for the money, you may reconsider and research the latest reimbursement and compensation trends for anesthesia providers. It seems the gravy train has derailed. By the way, I see nothing wrong in pursuing something for the money..I got into nursing for the livable wage and job security. Just something to be aware of and factor into your decision.

The two fields are stimulating and complex in opposite ways. Are you more interested in mental health or critical care? Would you prefer to work in an OR or open therapeutic milieu? Do you see yourself effectively managing vital signs and airways or impulse control and sobriety? Two fascinating fields. I hope that you find your niche!

Less reimbursement, less compensation, more saturated job market than 10 years ago. Read the CRNA board for more helpful info.
